As a nn for Roberta or on its own? Nice if the former, not good for a stand-alone name.

lulu25 · 31/05/2009 13:26

or alberta/albertine

ramonaquimby · 31/05/2009 13:26

is awful

short for Roberta?
(also awful)

LadyAga · 31/05/2009 13:29

tummytickler · 31/05/2009 14:08

beanieb · 31/05/2009 14:09

I like it as short for Roberta (also like Bobby as a NN)

Not so keen on its own though

WolframAlpha · 31/05/2009 20:18

Not as a proper name. Albertine ok-ish w Bertie as a nickname.

wrinklytum · 31/05/2009 20:21

No don't like,sorry.

Bonneville · 31/05/2009 20:32

Awful for a girl -sorry.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2009 20:33

Dear god, why would you??

Greensleeves · 31/05/2009 20:34

There were two German girls called Birte at my school who were called Bertie all the time. It was quite sweet in that context. I suppose short for Roberta it would be OK too, if it suited the girl in question - but only as a shortening.

LoveBuckets · 31/05/2009 22:39

Reminds me of Berniece the horrid cousin in the song 'Berniece bobs her hair'

Clary · 01/06/2009 01:13

I once heard someone say (on being introduced to a friend's newborn boy called Freddie) "oh I like the name Freddie for a girl".

My reaction was which is similar to that for this OP.

Bertie is a boy's name. It's a nickname for Albert (or Bertram, or Wilbert maybe).

I really am not keen on boys' names turned into girls' names, sorry (eg Roberta, Nigella, Albertina, etc). Like them less than names that do for both boys and girls (and I have one of those).

nooka · 01/06/2009 03:16

I think Bertie is a fairly horrendous name for a boy, let alone a girl. I quite like Roberta, but only because of the Railway Children, otherwise I agree with Clary it's a name which sounds too much "if only I had a boy but I'll have to make do IYSWIM". I would assume that any Bertie was really an Albert though - the Roberts I have known are Bob or Rob or Robbie/Bobbie for short.

AuntyAnna · 01/06/2009 09:04

I like Albertine

belgo · 01/06/2009 09:09

dreadful.

noddyholder · 01/06/2009 09:12

I love it My grandfather was Bertie so I had it (Roberta) on my shortlist for girls.

Ninjacat · 01/06/2009 09:27

I have a cousin called Bertie (short for Roberta). We took great delight in calling her Dirty Bertie through out her childhood.
She is now very resolutely Roberta to her adult friends.
