Hi, please criticise the following...and suggest nicknames or alternatives. We'd hate to give our potential ds a name that would cause teasing. W as first initial would be unfortunate with our surname which begins with C.

We're looking for something fairly traditional:

Philip James
Adam Philip
Matthew Jonathan
Jonathan
Nathaniel (but not Nathan)
Reuben
Thomas

We don't know the gender of our baby, but have agreed on girl names - very interesting to see our choices on other people's lists!

Hope you can help - thanks.

have a Matthew so am biased!

Jonathan could be sweet - I love jonny?

Not keen on Philip (as hate the shortening Phil) and Thomas is too popular here but I like the others.

Other names i like (as we seem fairly well aligned) are:-

Daniel
George
Oliver
Stanley

HTH

passmethegin · 20/05/2009 11:20

Can't see how any of those names would be grounds for teasing.
Favourite by far is Jonathan.
Not keen on like Philip or Nathaniel.

MrsJamin · 20/05/2009 11:49

Edward is a lovely standard boy's name with some nice nicknames too.

MrsJamin · 20/05/2009 11:49

Sorry other than that, Reuben or Adam are my faves from your list.

MadameCastafiore · 20/05/2009 11:51

Philip James - Phil would you want to be called Phil?
Adam Philip - Nice - better than Phil at least
Matthew Jonathan - Nice
Jonathan - bit old fsahioned - Jon come over here?
Nathaniel (but not Nathan) - Nate is a nice nickname for Nathaniel
Reuben - my fave name
Thomas - Nice but very common - in lots of not chavtastic.

sockmonster · 20/05/2009 14:22

Philip James- yawn,. I hate the name Philip, love the name James
Adam Philip- Adam is nice, but didn't he corrupt the garden of eden.. or was that eve? hmm. Adam is good.
Matthew Jonathan- Matthew is lovely
Jonathan-NO! Ghastly
Nathaniel (but not Nathan)- nice, classy, lovely
Reuben- nice. DP vetoed for 'sounding overtly jewish' but I think it's lovely
Thomas- Nice, but dull

so, matthew, nathaniel, reuben and james are best imo

sockmonster · 20/05/2009 14:30

But none of them would cause bad nicknames or teasing..

fizzpops · 20/05/2009 14:31

Philip James - not keen although love James
Adam Philip - again not keen on Philip
Matthew Jonathan - really nice
Jonathan - like
Nathaniel (but not Nathan)- not my cup of tea
Reuben - love but I'm not brave enough
Thomas - love

dizzydixies · 20/05/2009 14:31

Philip - no
Adam - nice
Matthew - a bit meh for me
Jonathan - no
Nathaniel - ok
Reuben - love
Thomas - love

Egg · 20/05/2009 14:33

Philip James - not too keen
Adam Philip - like Adam
Matthew Jonathan - Nice
Jonathan - OK
Nathaniel (but not Nathan) - Nice
Reuben - Lovely (goes nicely with my DCs names
Thomas - OK

BexieID · 20/05/2009 15:09

Thomas James (but i'm biased )
Adam James
Nathaniel James
Reuben

Our shortlist was Adam, Thomas and Toby. Would love to name DC2 Reuben if a boy but don't think DP likes the name. Nathaniel was on my first list of boys names too.

halia · 20/05/2009 19:50

Philip - too seventies for me
James - DS middle name and my hcoice so I love it (nn Jem or Jamie)
Adam - not keen
Matthew - like (nn Matt)
Jonathan - OK, bit common now
Nathaniel (but not Nathan) - love, was on my shortlist, (nn Nate or Nathan)
Reuben - too poncy
Thomas- was top of my list but we have a T surname

So I'd go for Thomas Nathaniel, Thomas James
or Matthew James

niccibabe · 20/05/2009 22:03

Thought of another one...

What about Theo?

Should we use a full name?
I think the full names for Theo are Theodore, Theophilus, Theobald.

Also, we know someone whose DD is Theo not Thea. Would there be confusion about whether potential DS is boy or girl?

Thanks for all your comments so far - very enlightening!

Theo - lovely lovely lovely

Theodore James

MrsJamin · 21/05/2009 06:32

Theo is lovely, DS was nearly that name. TJ cool initials too.

MrsMattie · 21/05/2009 08:18

I like Matthew and Nathaniel. Theo is gorgeous, too.

Really not keen on the others, particularly Jonathan and Phillip
