Matilda, Esmerelda, Rosalin?

We have been struggling to name DD. We decided on Matilda and then DP's family all seem to hate it, which has cast some doubt

They dislike the name Esmerelda more, but we liked the shortning Esme.

Rosalin is the only name they like, but I'm not sure about it (I love the name, but fear it's too bold for us), and she will have to spell it all the time, which I imagine is quite annoying. We'd shorten it to Roz.

I'm beginning to doubt Matilda now, which I really do love as a name I worry that it is too fancy in some way, not that our other choices aren't fancy!

Find something really outrageous that you know they'll hate, say ti's what you've chosen, then revert to Matilda and they'll be relieved! (At least this is how I plan to stave off the hoards of "opinions")

Choose a name you love - Matilda is lovely - and they naysayers will come round when they see your baby.

I have a Matilda, it's a gorgeous name. My mum thought I was joking when I told her my choice (not at all common where she lives) but she likes it now.

Excellent suggestion from VAM!

I really like Matilda too. A friend's DD is Matilda, nn Mattie.
I like VeryAnnieMary's suggestion of telling them a name they will hate and then go back to Matilda.
Or just don't tell them your name choices, we aren't for the reason that someone will always have an unhelpful opinion!

boodleboot · 11/05/2009 15:36

they had their chance to name a child when they had your DP......it really isn't a group thing this naming children malarkey!! neither should it be.....YOU are carrying this child and YOU should be naming it....with help from DP of course....

matilda is perfectly ok.....i like Tildy as a NN rather than Mattie

Esme is a name in its self.....esmerelda is awful - sorry.

branflake81 · 11/05/2009 15:40

Esmerelda is awful.

Matilda is a bit twee.

I really like Rosalin (but not Ros)

rubyslippers · 11/05/2009 15:42

I do love Matilda - no. 2 on my girl's list

I really don't think it is anything to do with your DP's family so use it if you want to

cthea · 11/05/2009 15:42

Matilda and Rosalind (I think it must have the final D) are v pretty. Esmeralda is a bit too South American soap opera.

PurlyQueen · 11/05/2009 15:54

Not a fan of any of them - they sound like three witches round a cauldrom. Sorry.

MrsHappy · 11/05/2009 15:57

Esmerelda I don't like.
To me Rosalin looks like a typo. Rosalind on the other hand is lovely.
Matilda is very pretty.

I think maybe you shouldn't ask DP's family for their input. Your baby and all that...

Rhubarb · 11/05/2009 15:58

I was going to call my dd Esmerelda. She's on my profile, but as you can see, Esmerelda just didn't quite suit her!

Matilda is gorgeous- don't be put off by your relatives or you will regret it! It's you baby after all!

Mamazon · 11/05/2009 19:19

i love Matilda and Esmerelda.

Castiel · 11/05/2009 19:24

I have a Mathilda, nn Tildy. Love it.

KiBe · 11/05/2009 22:01

Thanks so much for all your input :D

I understand that Esmerelda was a bit out there ;)

I can't remember where I saw the spelling Rosalin, but I do prefer it to Rosalind and Rosaline (which are two versions in shakespeare)

Glad that so many people seem to like Matilda though, my friends have been keen but I'm not sure how much some were just humouring me

how about Rosalyn i that case.....that is a much prettier spelling IMO and definitely doesn't look like a typo...

I really like Matilda. Not keen on Rosalin. Esmerelda is awful. Just go for Esme if you like that as a shortening. Have you considered Emmeline (Emmy)?

malenagrrl · 12/05/2009 13:08

Matilda is very nice, but there are two Matildas in DS's class, but still a lovely name.

I don't like Esmeralda, but Esme is ok if not a bit twee and old fashioned.

Fimbo · 12/05/2009 13:53

Esme

jellybeans · 12/05/2009 14:10

Matilda is a great name.

SouthernMeerkat · 12/05/2009 21:13

I'm biased as I have a Matilda (nn Tilly), so I love it. A friend has an Esme, which is gorgeous- but I wouldn't use Esmerelda as a full name....

Roaslin - don't like it. I was at school with a Rosalie which I would prefer.
