...Catriona.

Dp and I have differing opinions on this and I just wonder what the consensus would be amongst everyone out there. Maybe it depends on where, in the UK, you come from(?)

DD1 says TREE very strictly, as she is very strict. I am from Belfast, where TREE rules. (I haven't been away, but have been on pets threads a lot as we got a dog recently!) Are we all watching Pet Kenny ladies?

PinkTulips · 08/05/2009 23:07

lord no... haven't watched the late late except for the toy show since uncle gaybo abandoned us. although the plank is leaving soon as well isn't he?

stleger · 08/05/2009 23:11

I think Graham Norton should take over, all those politicians and people who come on and talk would hate that. Dh is watching, he has entered the competition. This is a sigh of us becoming elderly...

stleger · 08/05/2009 23:15

Sigh and sign!

PinkTulips · 08/05/2009 23:17

Caitni · 08/05/2009 23:17

No Pat Kenny for me in London - watching Newsnight instead...no substitute for Pat! Reckon Graham would be great on the late late...could RTE afford him though??

Caitni · 08/05/2009 23:18

Go one with you PinkTulips

stleger · 08/05/2009 23:19

Enjoy!

Caitni · 08/05/2009 23:27

So I actually meant "go on".

Jesus, time for me to close the old lap top and finish the wine!

JoPie · 09/05/2009 00:02

Pat Kenny, what a plank! Love Martin Sheen though.

stleger · 09/05/2009 00:15

Following the rules of Gaelic phonics there is a proper pronunciation..it is a Gaelic name and spoken in Gaelic it is pronounced Ca-Tria-na...smile

Macmam is correct. my Daughters name. My great Aunt taught the lang. Family is Highland Scot or Scots/Irish and I have checked it out with professors of language and historical sources.
Caitriona is Irish
Catriona is Scottish
Both are anglicized translations of a name originally in Gaelic and Erse. about 14 letters long and ending in gh!!
We owe Cat Tree O Na to the fact that The sequel to Kidnapped was seen by many (particularly in England, ) who had never heard it pronounced so they said it phonetically. Time has evolved it into popular pronunciation. the correct pronuncation is like Ca tria na. It is a soft sound with all the vowels soft. I live in England now and have this convo often so I say, beautiful name best left alone if you live in England. Closest you will get to correct pronunciation without the right accent is to condition peeps to say cat ree na. LOL Drives me nuts hearing her name mangled. I bumped into a nurse last year who pronounced it properly with a Glaswegian accent and it was so musical.

Cat re oh nah

baby101 · 06/06/2009 13:59

My name is Catriona but pronounced Katrina. However I get called Trina. All through school my name got mispronounced and I hated it. If your going to pronounce it Katrina then I suggest you spell it without the o as children like their names to be said the right way.

MaggieBee · 06/06/2009 14:04

CAT TREE un ah

(I'm Irish, but it's not my name) It's like Niamh eg, there's almost an extra syllable in there. NEEuv. not Neev.

skidoodle · 06/06/2009 14:32

The Irish name is spelled Caitríona - note the i before the t

Catriona is the Gaelic spelling AFAIK.

I'm not sure how Catriona should be properly pronounced, but Caitríona should be said

C o tch r EE uh n uh

but in English is normally just pronounced

Katrina

It's my DSis's name too. I think it's lovely.

wed99 · 06/06/2009 14:46

Baby101 are you my 10 year old daughters best friend? She is a Catriona pronounced Katrina but shortened in the playground to Trina! and she always comes out of school complaining that any supply teacher they have calls her Cat-re-un-ah
