Is 'Sofia' too much like sofa?

This is probably one of my favourite names but is spelling it 'Sofía/Sofia' far too similar to an item of furniture or the capital of Bulgaria? Or is it OK?

Honest opinions gratefully received

Well it is the same as the city but that's not a problem is it? It's a nice name. I wouldn't have connected it with sofa myself. (Well not until now! )

(Middle name could be Setteena?)

Sophia?

mascaraohara · 01/05/2009 14:17

we have a Sophia in our family. Never seen it spelt Sofia before (other than the place)

Amber71 · 01/05/2009 14:19

Its a beautiful name.

Sofia is gorgeous!

It's the Spanish/Italian version of Sophia and in my opinion much much nicer

The sofa thing is very tenuous. It doesn't come to mind at all.

My friend has a Sofia, I thought it was nice.

I love the name but I prefer it as Sophia.

salvadory · 01/05/2009 17:21

prefer Sofia to Sophia but both are good, never thought of the sofa connection until now.

pointydog · 01/05/2009 17:24

no, it's absolutely fine

Greensleeves · 01/05/2009 17:25

it's fine, and very pretty. I prefer Sophia though, personally

Sofia is not like 'sofa' but it's a bit too popular these days.

We live close to Italian border and all Sofia's are written with an 'f' around here.

DD was Sofia from the 20week scan until she was actually born (just didn't suit her in the end) I prefer it to Sophia (lots of them around here) and yes, we pronounced it differently too. It's a lovely name.

I have a Sofia, and only one person has pointed out the similarity to sofa (but only in the context of spelling it to someone else..."It's like sofa, but with an i in it!).

Unfortunately, several people have said "Oh, like the capital of Bulgaria." Why can't people keep their traps shut, and just say "What a lovely name" instead of making anxious new parents paranoid!

It does seem to be very popular at the moment though, so if you want to be different, don't pick it!!
