Jemima, Tabitha or Eliza

Or Clementine? Or Babette?

We're decided on boys names but we just can't agree on girls.

I've tried the JP test on all these names and they all seem ok but I like them all.

Opinions please. What do these five names conjure up for you? And do you know lots of little girls already with these names?

Babette sounds like a 60s porn star
Tabitha - cats or witch babies but I still like it
Clementine - can be shortened to Cleo which is nicer, imo
Jemima - ducks or dodgy dolls on PlaySchool (age showing here)
Eliza - fine as a nickname for Elizabeth

ickletickle · 16/04/2009 13:13

sorry i think babette is just awful. tabitha reminds me of cats.. but jemima and eliza are just lovely!

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/04/2009 14:04

gladders - I can assure you that tabitha will not always be shortened to tabby.

MrsMattie · 16/04/2009 14:06

Eliza is a beautiful name.

I think Jemima is pretty awful, to be honest.

Tabijtha - meh. Tabby is a horrid nickname, too.

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/04/2009 14:34

TABATHA'S DO NOT GET NICKNAMED TABBY UNLESS THEY CHOOSE TO.

BUT THEY DO BEHIND THEIR BACK AND WHEN BEING TEASED.

particularly just avoided if any chance of a touch of the ginge. obviously.

corolladevin · 16/04/2009 15:35

Yes I agree with ickletickle avoid Clementine if you have ginger or red hair. It would just be ammunition for teasing.

ScummyMummy · 16/04/2009 15:37

Eliza is a great name. The rest are too fussy for me.

Tidey · 16/04/2009 15:39

I'm very sorry to those of you who love the names, but I think both Tabitha and Jemima sound like names of pets. Eliza's very nice though.

lou33 · 16/04/2009 15:41

i love tabitha, there is one in my extended family, and it is shortened to tabi

dont know anyone called eliza or jemima though

pointellle · 16/04/2009 16:14

I like Clementine.
Eliza is a nickname. I would use Elizabeth instead.

Tinker · 16/04/2009 16:31

Elizabeth is lovely but it depends how you feel about the various other shortenings. I dislike Beth which your daughter may then opt for. Think Eliza stands as a name in its own right.

I do like Jemima as well but it's always been a rabbit's name to me.

Babette (which may be from Elizabth as well?) and Tabitha are lovely but I'd use as middle names

Not keen on Clementine

Lilyloo · 16/04/2009 16:32

Tabitha is lovely
Don't know any girls with any of your name choices and i have 2 dd's!

Don't like Babbette at all though.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 16/04/2009 16:32

Eliza is not a nickname. It is a name in its own right and was very popular as such in the nineteenth century.

pointellle · 16/04/2009 16:36

Where is it from then if not a nickname for Elizabeth?
I don't see what usage in the nineteenth century has to do with it.

Tinker · 16/04/2009 16:40

But a shortening of a name can become name in its own right surely? It woudl be the same as saying all Lisas should be called Elizabeth or all Susans should be called Susannah.

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/04/2009 16:45

mrswoolf - I like Tabs as a shortened version. It was my posting name when I first joined MN!

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 16/04/2009 16:46

Eliza is lovely.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 16/04/2009 16:57

It originated as a shortened form of Elizabeth, but as it has been used as a name in its own right for more than 200 years I think it would be OK for the OP to use it that way.

If you call her Elizabeth it'll get shortened to Liz(zie), not Eliza. If you want her called Eliza you'll have to call her Eliza. And it's a fabulous name.

Springflower · 16/04/2009 18:14

Like Tabitha best, others ok but definitely not Babette - agree porn star name!

LaDiDaDi · 16/04/2009 20:23

I love Eliza, like Jemima and can tolerate Tabitha.

Alishanty · 16/04/2009 20:32

Eliza. Like. Suggested this but dp not keen.
Tabitha, like but a bit of a cat name imo, actually it is my cat's name!
Jemima, never been keen, not sure why, maybe it was because of the doll in playschool or whatever it was called.
