Ah-lar-na ...like banana

usernametaken · 07/04/2009 16:50

My friend was an Alanna- she pronounced it A-LAN-NA

VintageGardenia · 07/04/2009 16:54

It's A-lann-ah because it's Anglicised from "a leanbh" pron. "a lann-uv" iyswim. Someone said earlier - when addressing a child. It's a sweet & pretty name.

lastboxoftampons · 07/04/2009 17:12

Ah-LAN-nah

Clure · 07/04/2009 17:18

friend has child with Alanna and they pronounce it al-an-a without the emphasis on middle syllable, its the Irish way to pronounce it

nellynaemates · 08/04/2009 12:48

I know an Alana pronounced Al-ae-nah but ordinarily I would pronounce it Al-ah-nah. I'm Scottish so I would never ever put an "r" in it. Looks most odd to me but guess it's a Southern pronunciation thing

christywhisty · 08/04/2009 13:16

I knew an Alana and she was A -lar-na

christywhisty · 08/04/2009 13:17

forgot to say she was half indian and half irish, so not sure where her name came from

RachieB · 10/04/2009 12:13

The Alana's i know PN it A - lar - na

Metatron · 10/04/2009 13:08

Where does the r come from? A Lah Na.

ScottishThistle · 10/04/2009 13:15

Another one wondering where on earth does the "R" come from??? Never heard of the name Alana (a-la-na) being said in any other way!

Thunderduck · 10/04/2009 13:22

The second pronounciation. I've known a few Alanas and why would it be pronounced with an r when there isn't one?

BTW There's no r in bath either. I've never understood why people say barth.

Littlefish · 10/04/2009 13:59

I know 2.

One is pronounced Alan-a (like the boy's name Alan, but with a short "a" on the end (like in apple).

The other is

A-larn-a

ItsMargotBeaurEGGarde · 10/04/2009 16:32

Al-anna.

But i wouldn't say the anna part the same way as i'd say anna in annabel or just anna. i'd say it a bit more like you say bath or glass in England. intrusive ah!? is that it?

when you type arna, do you actually mean that you'd pronounce the R?

nappyaddict · 10/04/2009 17:33

It's pronounced A-lan-a

TabithaTwitchet · 10/04/2009 20:50

definately a-LAR-na
