Thisbe

What do you htink of the name Thisbe?
I used to know one 20 years ago and have often thought about it, now it has a bit of meaning to after a rather eventful night out when dh and i went to the theatre to see A Midsummer Nights Dream!
Does it go with Iris, Eli, Pearl and Amos.
I think i am really liking it and i think Thisbe Jean is lovely.
Opinions please!

I am put off Thisbe by the fact that when I was little I had a version of Cinderella in which one of the ugly sisters was called Thisbe.
I prefer Cordelia personally - it is the name that Anne of Green Gables always wanted to be called.

Re Heebie-Jeebie. one of the Hebes is a very good friend of my dd, I am in the habit of calling my ds Eli-beeli and i am forever stopping myself calling her Heebie-Jeebie .

I wasn't sure if you got distracted by your "little moment" and missed the fact that the character is an unconvincing transvestite who can't act.

If that doesn't bother you, go for it.

The original story from Roman mythology is much less comedic - very close to Romeo & Juliet. Pyramus & Thisbe killed themselves under a Mulberry tree, and their blood stained the white fruits a deep purple.

I think it's a lovely name, and you should go for it.

I like it but have just tried to say it with the other 4 names and feel there are too many sibilants with Iris, Amos and Thisbe.

Love it, go for it, naysayers be damned. If I have a son I've a favourite Midsummer Nights Dream name I like too, but I'm not giving it away on here!

I know you like Jean, but I cannot forget my poor Gran who was given two names she hated, Jean being one of them!

I actually like this but would be wary about using it as it so obviously rhymes with frisbee!! Iris and Pearl and gorgeous btw!

The lisp issue would worry me enough to delegate it as an unusual middle name choice I think

I know there is potential laughter and bullying in every name, that one is a little more obvious than many unfortunately. Shame as it sounds quite nice as a word if you can separate the frisbee and the joke midsummer night character thing (that is the only other place I have ever heard it being used so springs to mind automatically)

Where is it from? Never heard of it before.

Nappyaddict - it is from the Tale of Pyramus and Thisbe. Shakespeare used ths tale in A Midsummer Nights Dream, but it's origins are in Greek Mythology.
