Ottilie or Ottalie?

Apologies to those who have seen this question at the end of a previous thread, but I have to register our new dd soon and we have STILL not decided on a spelling.
The official (saint's name etc) spelling is Ottilie, but there are Ottalie's out there and we were thinking it might be easier to spell?
Any opinion on which we should choose?
thanks!

Ottilie

Congratulations on your dd.

PottyCock · 30/03/2009 22:06

Lovely name.
Ottilie here too - very pretty.

ShowOfHands · 30/03/2009 22:06

Ottilie.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 30/03/2009 22:09

Ottilie.

When very small, children first learn to spell their name by copying, so the 'easier to spell' argument doesns't really apply, as by the time she's into phonics and grapheme-phoneme rules she'll already know how to spell her name.

Congratulations on your dd. It's a lovely name, too.

How's it pronounced?

differentEggD · 30/03/2009 22:13

Ottilie

Beesmummy · 30/03/2009 22:16

perfect, thank you, pretty unanimous then!!!
Ottilie is pronounced Ottilly (Ot to rhyme with Hot and ttilie to rhyme with Tilly) if that makes sense! But that is what I am worried about - she is going to hate us when the doctor's receptionist makes about 15 attempts at her name in the future... I thought maybe Ottalie was easier to pronounce and spell, but preferred Ottilie as it is the original spelling.

Congratulations- I just posted on your other thread, a little too late Where is the emphasis in the name Ottilie- is it OT-tilly, or Ot-TIL-ly- if that makes sense?!

RachieB · 31/03/2009 10:18

changing it to Ottalie, changes the pronounciation

so stick with Ottilie

MargaretMountford · 31/03/2009 10:19

Ottilie, definitely - very pretty too

ScottishThistle · 31/03/2009 10:23

summermumtobe · 31/03/2009 10:58

Ottilie- pretty choice!

hedgiemum · 31/03/2009 11:00

Ottilie. Looks much prettier. This was on our shortlist, but just found out from a private 3d scan that the original sonographer was wrong and we're having a boy!!

Beesmummy · 31/03/2009 22:30

wow Hedgiemum thank goodness you had second scan! would have been v weird to be so prepared for a dd and get a ds! Do they get it wrong a lot?

Yep, definitely with an i, not an a.

Dottoressa · 31/03/2009 22:34

Ottilie. It's a beautiful name, and my DD would have had it if DH hadn't been a stick in the mud!

Ronaldinhio · 31/03/2009 22:47

for once a lovely name

MrsSchadenfreude · 31/03/2009 23:50

I have an Ottilie!

hedgiemum · 01/04/2009 19:40

Hi Beesmummy, the 20 week scan hasn't got the gender wrong with any of our older 3, so I guess its not common, but it was a very rushed scan with stressed sonographer, which is why we went for the private scan. So i;m back to the drawing board with names!

Huge congratulations on the birth of baby Ottilie (however you decide to spell it...!)

Beesmummy · 10/04/2009 20:39

She is Ottilie - thanks everyone.
