It's not a bad name is it?

They were pretty negative about DS's name too. They are usually great parents, but they just weem to be incapable of being nice about the names I give my children. Is it so bloody hard to say 'that's nice' and bloody well smile???

Rant.

I prefer it with a C myself, but it's a lovely name.

We were considering it for a girl as it was my great grandmother's name, but there was something stopping us, I think. It's pretty and there's lots of ways to shorten it, but in the end we wanted something a bit more unusual. Plus, we're having a boy. Plus, my brother just named his daughter Kaitlyn and we felt it was too close.

Good luck!

Perfectly good name.
There is nothing wrong with it.

hedgiemum · 24/03/2009 11:01

Katherine is a great name with a lot of different options if wanted in the future. I would stop discussing it with them. My parents are nice about every name we think about - I know they do it so that they get to be "in on" the name discussions, which I think is sweet, though sometimes might be helpful for them to have a bit of an opinion.

Well they obviously have no taste My dd1 has this name but spelt Katharyn. I think it's a lovely name and has lots of ways it can be shortened if you want it to be. At the end of the day, it's your choice and if they don't like it, well, they'll just have to lump it

squeaver · 24/03/2009 11:03

It's my dd's middle name spelled Katharine.

It was going to be her first name, shortened to Kate or Katie, but we changed our minds when she was born as - with our surname - it sounds a bit wishy-washy (no other way to describe it).

Tbh, I prefer it shortened.

Are your parents expecting your dcs to be named after them by any chance?

MargaretMountford · 24/03/2009 11:03

Katherine is beautiful -I love it

MargotBeauregardesGavel · 24/03/2009 11:04

I quite like it. Makes a change imo.

My mum's friend Katherine was always called Kay. her dd called her dd Katherine though. Not mad about Kate mind you but Kay or Katya or Katherine all nice.

kando · 24/03/2009 11:04

Marla, I wanted dd1 to shorten her name to that but it never happened - I LOVE Kitty!

traceybath · 24/03/2009 11:05

Its a lovely name and agree with others that kitty is a fab nn.

MargaretMountford · 24/03/2009 11:06

oh yes, Kitty is adorable !!

mickeylou · 24/03/2009 11:17

prefer it with a "c" but its a nice name either way.

prettybird · 24/03/2009 11:18

It was on my short list if ds had turn out to be a dd. I like it with the K.

What is nice about it is that there are so many different ways to shorten it - so you can choose whichever one matches best.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 24/03/2009 11:19

I love it, its my DD's middle name.

HensMum · 24/03/2009 11:24

I love it. I would have considered it for a girl but it's my sister's name. She's always been Katy though so I never think of her as a Katherine.

georgimama · 24/03/2009 11:24

It's a lovely name. I've always liked it. I prefer it with a K too.

I'd use it for a DD if it wasn't the name of DH's long lost sister who no one ever mentions.

kando · 24/03/2009 11:25

My dd's nickname is "KitKat", which her wee sister came up with! She loves it and so do we! [She's just as delicious as the chocolate too!]

traceybath · 24/03/2009 11:26

Oh and just to add i like the following spelling 'kathryn'

FelineOkay · 24/03/2009 11:27

I like it but I would shorten it.

It's a cool name.

MamaG · 24/03/2009 11:28

I like it, but it should be Catherine

MaryAnnSailors · 24/03/2009 11:28

Great name!
Makes me wonder, what names do your parents like?

Cies · 24/03/2009 11:29

It's a lovely traditional name with so many possible shortenings that you and she can pick the one that most suits her.

MamaG · 24/03/2009 11:29

My sister is Catherine, known as Cas

MrsTittleMouse · 24/03/2009 11:31

There's nothing wrong with it!
I like it shortened to Katie for a little girl but Kitty is sweet too.

FelineOkay · 24/03/2009 11:33

Kitty/Katie/Cat/Kat/Kit-Kit

Fantastic name, I may change mine.
