Oh well, it was always going to happen. Any ideas? Boys names...

Yes, I know it's been done to death but our little boy is due in 1 week and still no decision.

DH likes:
Max
Lucas
George

I like:
Barnaby
Laurence
Henry
Bruno

Actually I quite like Max but Kerry Catona has rather put me off. Also not convinced on Maxwell.

So, the criteria:

  • Would prefer something not in the top 30 and on the up rather than the wane.
  • Would prefer a longer name that can be shortened (Barnaby -> Barnes/Barney etc).
  • Our surname starts with a C, so any name ending with same sound is a bit of a mouthfull with an odd intake of breath (so rules out Luc/Luke which we do like).
  • Surname is also an occupation.

Normally a lurker, and sorry to ask, but any ideas?

Sebastian

VeryAnnieMary · 20/03/2009 15:12

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the names - all fine choices. Could you and DP rank each others faves to see if one of you can be persuaded onto the other list?

seeker · 20/03/2009 15:12

James, Siegfried or Tristan.

(only joking - PLEASE don't call him Siegfried!)

FrumpyPumpy · 20/03/2009 15:17

See I love Sebastian but DH thinks all of my choices it a bit Jilly Cooper.

Hmmm. Siegfried...

Alexander?

shortens to Xan, Xander, Sandy and Sacha (Russian I think).

FrumpyPumpy · 20/03/2009 15:37

Alexander. Love it. He doesn't, and a friend has a 3 month old called Alex.

I do actually like Lucas but there is an ex-bf...

jellybeans · 20/03/2009 17:24

Max

jumpyjan · 20/03/2009 17:33

Max is on my list (not Maxwell just Max). Whats it got to do with Kerry Katona? Is one of her kids called that?

MrsMattie · 20/03/2009 17:34

Louis/Louie?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 20/03/2009 17:36

Benedict
Nathaniel

Lizzylou · 20/03/2009 17:37

I like Barnaby and Lucas best of both lists
(Henry seems to be getting popular, thought tis lovely...but then I have a Harry )

Benedict? (Be nice, it's DS2's name!)
Joel
William
Edward
Theo
Edwin
Edmund

JustKeepSwimming · 20/03/2009 17:37

I have a Henry so biased there
Next one will be George if a boy

also like Max, not keen on any of the other sorry.
Lucas-Luke?
Barney (one of my cats!)
Bruno - too frank bruno for me.

KK not a problem, DH probably never heard of her!

dizzydixies · 20/03/2009 18:15

what about Hugo?!

am determined someone should have a boy called Hugo

shoobidoo · 20/03/2009 18:19

I like all of your name suggestions but am less keen on your dh's choice.... I particularly like Barnaby and Bruno!

MsBump · 20/03/2009 18:24

I love the name Barney. its a cute baby name and a cool adult name. Know a really 'hot' Barney from my old work...maybe that's what it is

TheSonnets · 21/03/2009 19:42

I much prefer your choices and I do love Laurence.I think this is a great name and was on my list but it was vetoed at the time by dh also.

Barnaby I like but the shortened version conjures up the image of that big purple dinosaur.Bruno I somehow would expect a dark haired little boy and think of Nigella Lawson's son but a good name .I know quite alot of Henrys and Georges so maybe not if you want a name on the up rather than already popular .

Tell your Dh your choices are not Jilly Cooper style - he means too posh I assume.Men are really funny about their son's name IMO and worry about anything that could remotely be seen as different.

I don't like Max - seems like the shortened version of a name but not keen on the full Maxmillan(roman emperor) or Maxwell (coffee).

Gabriel - Gabe? Gilbert - Gil?

piscesmoon · 21/03/2009 19:46

George or Henry

janeite · 21/03/2009 19:55

From your list I love:
Max, Lucas, Barnaby and Laurence.

Slambang · 21/03/2009 19:57

You can't do Luke. What about Luca?

Sidge · 21/03/2009 20:56

Gregory
Jonathan
Benedict
Tobias

jkklpu · 21/03/2009 21:02

Perhaps some negotiating techniques could be handy here:

  • each identify one off the other's list that you don't actively dislike and could probably live with;
  • agree that you'll toss a coin;
  • whoever doesn't get his/her choice decides on the middle name and gets 1st choice next time around;
  • agree that veto allowed only if the other really cannot stand the name and, if that's the case, the winner's 2nd choice stands.
If the worst case scenario for you here is actually OK (Lucas?), then you don't have much to lose.

Alternatively, suggest that you get to choose and then middle name will be dh's name....
