Names *can* be stolen. Oh yes they can

If a person rules out the names of nieces/nephews, friends' children, neighbours' children, and pores through names books, checking popularity of names on line, their meanings, how quickly the name is rising and so on, before deciding on a well-researched name; then they are entitled to be disgruntled if somebody in their circle of acquaintance settles on the same name.

eg, you call your baby Dulcie Meryl. The family 5 doors down the road who you don't really know' call their child Dulcie or Meryl. Or you cousin calls her dd Meryl Dulcie, but she 'hardly ever sees you'.

I think this is completely weird and I cant believe people think it's OK. It's not ok.

I wouldn't be bothered about the neighbor, but would probably be upset if my cousin did that. However, people need to remember, if they don't share their names, there's no way for others to know that they might be "stealing"!

Whose to say that they didn't think of the name at the same time as you or they're not naming their daughter after their great-auntie Dulciea and her sister Meryl?

In my ante-natal class no fewer than 3 of us had in mind the name of I eventually gave my daugher. Whose stealing what name then?

The name is Dulcie. Not Meryl. A friend has a 5 month old called Dulcie. A woman she knows through their elder children has just named her newborn Dulcie. Her older children have more conservative names.

A definite name thief! That is annoying and all it succeeds in doing is showing that the parent is not very original and is shameless in pinching someone elses name to boot

Gavel - it's the hammer-y thing that judges bang when they've made their... er... judgment. So "gavel" kind of means "I have proclaimed my official verdict". (Can you tell I didn't do any looking up in a dictionary?)

Dulcie isn't conservative. I wouldn#t expect there to be more than one Dulcie in a random group of 100 girls. I'd put money on there being one Dulcie in every 500 girls. I would stop betting after that.

Not sure that it really matters in this case. I think if your sister or best friend had a baby at same time and gave it exact same name that would be pretty unfortunate, but then again you can't not use the name you've set your heart on because someone else uses it. Round here, unfortunately, every other girl inc dd seems to be called Lola Rose or Lily Rose. I suppose you could say the friend is less unlikely to have thought of Dulcie spontaneously.

The only Dulcie I know is Dulcie Gray- blue rinse brigade... seems quite conservative choice to me.

Being slightly annoed is normal, lots of things more than slightkly annoy me but stealing it isn't- it's not your property.

Actually I wish someone would steal ds2's name; he's desperate to meet anohter Stirling LOL, lots of people on here almost pick it, maybe Dad was right when he said it was a shite name (but ds2 loves it).

I did rule out Elliott after sis picked Elis for her due 3 months before ds4 baby, btw, but had a friend / relative chosen Rose in any form i'd have used it as it was my Nan's name and if I ahd had a girl it would have been her middle name whatever.

SIL "stole" the name I always wanted for a future DD. I think that's a bit too close knit and won't use it now. But I don't see the problem if a friend or neighbour uses the name.
