Would you go ahead and use it?

I am having a boy in a couple of weeks. My brother and his wife had a baby boy last week.

DH and I always joked that there was no point us choosing a name until my brother had had his baby as I knew we liked all the same names and they would no doubt choose 'our' name (although my brother and I never actually discussed name choices).

Anyway, as expected my nephew's first name was in fact on my shortlist and obviously I wouldn't now use that name. However, his middle name is our number 1 choice - that DH and I had really been very set on.

Do you think we can still go ahead and use that name as our son's first name? After all my nephew will never actually be called by his middle name so it wouldn't cause any family confusion.

What do you think?? I'm feeling in a bit of a quandry as I really DO want to use the name but am not sure whether I should...... To be honest I don't think my brother would be too bothered, so that's not the issue, it's just a general worry about very close aged cousins having the same name (even though for one it would be his middle name)

Oh definitely use it, you'll regret it if you don't, and I don't know many people who actually use their children's middle names at all.

I cant see why not, I have recently made contact with a long lost brother, we both have dd with the same first name

MrsJamin · 14/03/2009 17:51

I think it's fine but it might be worth just checking with your DB - it's quite flattering that they chose it too and as you say, no one ever really knows middle names anyway.

piscesmoon · 14/03/2009 17:52

I thought you were going to say the same first name and was going to say that we had the same problem and had to have a different one. Second name would be fine.

frazzledoldbag · 14/03/2009 20:38

No problem with that I don't think. Can see why you might be worried but as you say nobody knows most people's middle names anyway. Go for it, I suspect you'd always wish you had if you don't.

i think its fine to use I consideered two of my nephews middle names for DS and it didnt cross my mind it could be an issue

wibblewobbly · 14/03/2009 20:46

I see no problem in using the middle name at all. As you said, your nephew will not be called by his middle name anyway.

What are the names? Sorry just curious

Karamazov · 14/03/2009 21:43

There's only a few months between me and my cousin. She has my middle name. Its never been an issue in my family. I'd go for it (assuming that your db is cool with it too).
