While we're on the subject of Finlay ....

How popular is it really?

We're still torn between Oscar and Finlay and the only reason I'm not sure about Finlay is that a few people have said it's becoming quite common. We already have a DS called Samuel which I love but it was in the top 10 names for his birth year so I'd like to have something a bit different this time.

Now that we can't check the baby names for 2008 I have no idea if this is the case. If your DC are at school/nursery, have you come across many?

Finlay is lovely, and I don't know any near where I live.

abroadandmisunderstood · 07/03/2009 20:20

Haha! DS1 was going to be named Oscar, but as he was delivered on the Oscars night we changed to...

Finlay.

MaryBS · 07/03/2009 20:21

A customer's grandson has just been named Finlay.

GossipMonger · 07/03/2009 20:22

None at our school.

VerynicenonacidicTits · 07/03/2009 20:24

Rachealb thats my ds2's name, nice to know someone likes it, its not really heard of i dont think

frazzledoldbag · 07/03/2009 20:37

I know way more Finlays than Oscars. But I think there are a fair few of both around to be honest.
Finlay (or what about Finn as an alternative) is the nicer one I reckon.

Wilts · 07/03/2009 20:40

Well mine is a Finley and he is the only one in his school (he is 6) although I do hear it quite frequently when out and about.

Wallace · 07/03/2009 20:42

I think I know about 6 boys called Finlay ut no Oscars. We are in Scotland though

rachels103 · 07/03/2009 21:14

I only know 1 Finlay and 1 Finn out of ds's nursery friends and the school where I teach. So not overly common round here. I like it, but ds has vetoed it for some reason.

teafortwo · 07/03/2009 21:16

I don't know anyone called Finlay - hence my complete confusion over the spelling!!!!

nobodysfool · 07/03/2009 21:20

I have a Finlay.
We have only met one other and he was much older.Tbh we call him Fin maost of the time.

serenity · 07/03/2009 21:21

My new nephew is called Finlay, weirdly enough he has a brother called Samuel, so they do go together - he is the only Finlay I know though.
