I always presumed Mary but some people say Moira. Does anyone know?

Moira

VintageGardenia · 16/02/2009 10:48

I'm Irish & I would pronounce it Moira, I've never heard it pronounced Mary!

nigglewiggle · 16/02/2009 10:49

I used to work with a maire and she pronounced it my-a! This doesn't help does it .

Penthesileia · 16/02/2009 10:49

It's pronounced: Moy-ah.

dizzydixies · 16/02/2009 10:50

am with VG on this one and would pronounce it Moira

is there something you'd like to tell us LofW

VintageGardenia · 16/02/2009 10:50

Not in Ireland it's not! Even if I'd never heard the name before, the rules of pronunciation in Irish would make me say Moy-reh.

Penthesileia · 16/02/2009 10:52

Well, it was my granny's name, and my mum's name, and my middle name... And we've always called ourselves Moy-ah...

VintageGardenia · 16/02/2009 10:52

Is that Scots then?

Penthesileia · 16/02/2009 10:53

Am Scottish, btw.

Penthesileia · 16/02/2009 10:53

What do you think of Róisín?

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 16/02/2009 18:33

lol, also nice

my absolute favourite was Muiranne pn Mirrin but dh and I agreed from very beginning no very scottish or irish names seeing as he's irish and I'm scottish

so we have an Italian, a Greek and a latin one - makes much more sense don't you think

bloomingnora · 16/02/2009 18:37

My Irish friend has a baby Maire - pronounced Marry!

dizzydixies · 16/02/2009 18:43

Marry in Scotland is Mhairi spelling

SalmonintheLiffey · 16/02/2009 18:48

I'd pronounce it almost like Moyra, not quite, like a cross between mawra and moyra. Hard to type.. I don't like it.

Prefer Roisin. Is that in the frame?

SalmonintheLiffey · 16/02/2009 18:54

One of my son's doctors is called Muireann pronounced Mwirren. I didn't like it when I first heard it but it's grown on me. I also know a toddler Muireann, spelt the same but pronounced Mirren.

I also love Clodagh. That's becoming quite popular in Ireland now, #8 I think. I almost called my dd Clodagh 6 yrs ago, well, I say almost but her English father said 'what? like Claddagh ring?" and that made me feel a bit queasy. that explains why it's not 'flying' in the UK!
