Is there a longer more formal name for Spike?

Fair enough if you don't like it etc and we've heard all of the dog's name comments so I'm not looking to be persuaded otherwise.

I've always preferred a longer more formal name then the use of a nick name, Henry/Hal and Benoit/Benny (current family names)

I'm not sure what it would be lengthened to so any suggestion would be great.

Someone suggested Spencer on the other thread.

Oh I'm sorry I didn't realise there was another thread, very bad manners. I will search for it.

A friend's son is called Spike, real name Sebastian

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 12/02/2009 12:20

Spike is a great name, I love it.

Honeyontoast · 12/02/2009 12:21

I knew a Spike who really was just Spike (or so he said anyway, maybe he had a very embarrassing real name!)

One of he tlead vampires in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (bear with me...) was called Spike. But his full name was William.

Just thought i'd throw that in - made me onder if Spike is a nickname for William. Which is a lovely name.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 12/02/2009 13:33

He was nick named Spike because he used to torture people with rail road spikes.

Not that I watch Buffy of course

Spencer is nice. Though apparently Spike is growing in popularty along with names like Luna and Blade.

charitygirl · 12/02/2009 13:39

oh yeah! hahaha.

god, sorry OP - that was really unhelpful of me.

I know a little Spike - v cool, but then I am an Elvis Costello fan. Don't know if he has a long version but I would go for Spencer or Sebastian and shorten it.

Gorionine · 12/02/2009 13:43

Is SUPECALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALEDOCIOUS the proper name? Then Spike is definitely easier in the ear!

FSB · 12/02/2009 14:03

my Mum's called Spike - she always gets people assume that she's going to be a man!!

singyswife · 12/02/2009 14:06

My nephew gets spike and he is Michael.

NoBiggyValentineItsBollox · 12/02/2009 14:16

Must be Spichael.

singyswife · 12/02/2009 14:19

He had spikey hair when he was little and my dh called him spikey mikey which is now just Spike. He really suits it.

PuppyMonkey · 12/02/2009 14:23

I know a Spike whose real name is Paul.

Sebastian is too nice a name in itself to be shortened to Spike imho!

Honeyontoast · 12/02/2009 16:34

I really like Michael too. And Jeffery but the whole family has vetoed it.
