Alexandra - question for mummies who know Alexandras

Are your daughters happy with the name Alexandra? Does having a unisex name for a girl causes problems. Presumably if it is shortened to Allie or Lexi rather than Alex it is not a problem, and it is such a nice grand name for when a girl is grown up.

My first choice for a girls name is Alexandra, I have a good friend with this name who is a beautiful person inside and out and my best friend growing up was also Alex (Ali to her mum but always Alex to everyone else). Her boyfriend used to call her sexy lexy!

lizziemum our is fondly known as the ASBO kid or beelzee-baby

if you ask her name she tells you 'I'm Lexie-baby!!!!'

I too am an Alexandra and absolutely love my name - so much so that I've given it to my daughter as a middle name. I'm called Alex at work (which can really surprise people when a woman turns up for a meeting!) and my parents call me Alee which I love too. From experience the ambiguity of Alex usually works to my advantage (but it does annoy me when the generally dumb call me 'Alexander') I know so many people who don't like their name so feel really fortunate to have a name that's classic and unpretentious. Fab choice!

I had a boy, but Alexandra was my girls name choice.

Was aiming for Alexandra on the birth certificate but Alex for every day use.

I love the idea of strong sounding girls names - hate all the feminine rubbish (worst examples Chole, Daisy and Sophie - know this will offend, but that's my view)

My dd is Alexa. And we call her either Lexie or Alexa, and yes, she is also a 'Lexie Loon'.

DH's cousin is Alexandra. Her family have always called her this but as a teenager and at Uni she insisted all her friends call her Alex. Now in her late 20s she wishes they called her Alexandra but feels it's too late to insist they all change back. I do like the name a lot, but perhaps it's perceived as not feminine enough at the moment, as it's not all that popular in the rankings.

My 3yo goddaughter is an Alexandra. Very definitely that as well - not yet shortened in any way. But she will probably get all variants as she starts school. Her parents picked it because it works in both of their native countries as well as English - it's one of relatively few 'universal' names.

Oh, and she is one of the Alexandras that Dizzy describes: very very definitely knows her own mind and lets everyone know!

All the ones I know are known as Alex. It's a nice name. I like Lexie for short but it put me off as rhymes with sexy and was worried about playground names.

I know a little girl called Alexandra, who is also known as Alexa, I think its a lovely name!

The one I know spells her nickname Alix.

It's my name & it's the absolute bees-knees of a name, imo!

Didn't like being called Alex when I was a kid & wouldn't answer to it. I quite like Alex now. But never Sandy, or Lexy or any of those other cringe-worthy names. (apologies to any Sandys or Lexys out there!)

Thanks for the continued feedback. I do like the fact that there are Alexandras in every generation it seems, so the name shouldn't be a fad name that dates.

i am not so keen on lexy although sandy has grown on me since meeting a teen boy one

will show this thread to DD tomoroow to try and force her to reclaim her birthright!
