Help needed please! I've been reading the message boards searching for names and would love feedback on Maximus for a boy (I'm sure he'd mostly be Max). My DH absolutely LOVES it and I hated it at first but the more he talks about it the more used to it I get!

Ou surname is Evans so I'm keen for something unususal...

And for a girl?? All the names I love are too common I think: Grace, Lily, Daisy and so on.

What about Estella? (Yes I am a Dickens fan).

not Estella Evans!

Maximus I could take or leave tbh - Max is cool but am not a fan of its 'full' versions (and have an aversion to giving shortened versions as a full name)

Wolfblass · 03/02/2009 11:50

I'm personally not keen on Max as nearly every other peson i know has or has had a dog called Max and i'm not keen on names that remind me of people's pets.

Maximus is a nickname name i use for dp (he is Mark) and i'm just not sure at all about it tbh.

Not keen on Estella either.

When you say unusual

How about girls: Amara, Xanthe or Xanthia, or Fleur ?

Boys i'm not too sure about - although if i looked hard enough i'm sure i'd find many!

hobbgoblin · 03/02/2009 11:52

Rafferty is my latest possible.

Still like Leon, Ozrik, Lenny and Dcs like Marley but I keep thinkoing of the book Marley and Me or whatever it is entitled!

robinia · 03/02/2009 11:54

What about Maxim?

I personally like names that can be shortened - then dcs have some choices if they don't like the full name.

ScottishMummy · 03/02/2009 11:54

maximus?makes me think gluteus maximus

hobbgoblin · 03/02/2009 11:55

Bother! I meant to post my own thread not stick this on the end of yours. New Mumsnet PITA-ness!

My DS is Maxim which I find less OTT (imo) than some of the other full versions of Max.

moondog · 03/02/2009 11:56

Maximus would just be tagged to any insult.

You are maximus knobbus/arsus/twattus and so on.

Sorry,but it would.

Maxim is nice.So is max.

Lemontart · 03/02/2009 11:59

Maximus.. Hmmm - what happens if he is a (how do I say this politely) a chubby child? Lining him up for teasing IMO.
I really liked Estella and Estelle for a girl?s name when we were hunting for DD2. DH pointed out the shortened version was rather like the beer and it put me off!

Oooh I like Rafferty hobbgoblin. I taught a gorgeous Rafferty lad - big blue eyes, tumbling wavy locks and a very arty little lad who was different from the others yet totally accepted and rather popular in a quirky way. One cool kid in the making

charitygirl · 03/02/2009 12:06

Maxim or Maxilimilian better than Maximus Ithink.

Or if you like the MEANING of Maximus, how about Magnus?!

ScottishMummy · 03/02/2009 12:08

bottom line is it is equivalent to naming your child ^bum arse large or expansive

seeker · 03/02/2009 12:19

My dd is a Grace in a school of 1400 girls - and there are more Xanthes than Graces!

PLEASE not Maximus - he'll have hell if he does Latin. And Maximus Evans sounds like a character from a children's TV programme. Probably a mouse - with a sibling called Minimus.

blue27 · 03/02/2009 12:28

Thanks for the feedback... I suspected it might be negative! Maximus does mean great and powerful though, I don't really think it has connotations of mouse or fat arse, but I'll bear it mind!

Good to hear about Grace; it's such a beautiful name.

BalloonSlayer · 03/02/2009 12:30

Hardly anyone does Latin these days!

Although I do think of Nauseous Maximus from The Life of Brian...

But who'll know? He'll be called Max!

ScottishMummy · 03/02/2009 12:34

most definitely more than connotations of arsegluteus maximus it is your bum

ScottishMummy · 03/02/2009 12:39

maybe no one studies Latin language and literature but in anatomy, medicine, health it is still knocking around and commonly used eg nocte,Pro re nata, eclampsia

PeachyBAHonsPRSCertOnRequest · 03/02/2009 12:45

DH wanted Maximus for ds2; I wanted Maximillain so we decided to skip it and just use Max as a middle name instead.

Not keen, sorry.

I like Estella but not with Evans unless with a much used middle name (so Estella Marie Evans, or Estella Grace iyswim- used i the manner of Ellie May is often)

Nobody at our school called Grace Lily (but our cat is LOL) or Daisy, all nice

BalloonSlayer · 03/02/2009 12:47

Rafferty, I always like to imagine, was the Christian name of Fotherington-Thomas from the Molesworth books.

dizzydixies · 03/02/2009 12:50

Rafferty is nice, is MIL's maiden name but we had 3 dds

what about Maddox nn Max if the other longer versions don't float your boat

Grace is also a lovely name but mine all came out 10,11,9 lbs so were never going to be a 'Grace'

BalloonSlayer · 03/02/2009 12:51

Actually I have just looked it up and F-Ts name was Basil.

What a shame. Should have been Rafferty.

baby4me · 04/02/2009 15:08

my ds is called maximus. we love it. in latin it means 'the greatest' and to us he is our greatest little miracle as we went through ivf to achieve him!

we looked at maxim but it reminded us of the lads mag. maxwell reminded us of coffee and maximillian was on a par with tarquin (no offence, just not our style).

our lo gets max most of the time but i think its nice he has a choice of a longer version of his name when hes older.

if you like it go for it.

MadameCastafiore · 04/02/2009 15:14

DS is Maximilian - but he generally goes by the name of Max. I wanted him to be called Elliot but DDs name is Harriet and that would have been a bit silly having a Harriet and an Elliot.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/02/2009 15:26

We used to have a dachshund called Max. Short for Max Planck.

Maxim is good though... or am I just seduced by the dramatizations of 'Rebecca'?

If you like Dickens, maybe that could be a source of other ideas... my mind went blank after Agnes and Dora (neither of which I think go with Evans).

moopymoo · 04/02/2009 15:29

ds2 middle name is maxwell, as is his dad, grandad and ggdad. I quite like it for him, not sure about maximus though.
