Arwen / Eowyn?

We both like both these names, but do they scream Lord of the Rings obsessed parents? We're not, but like the semi-celtic vibe, and don't want people to think we chose them because of the books/films (especially as my husband does the LotR warhammer stuff from Games Workshop...

I knew a Welsh girl called Awen.
Eowyn is distinctly LOTR, sorry.
Do you like Olwen/Olwyn?

Scarletibis · 29/01/2009 16:26

We chose Arwen as one of my dds middle names.

I have an great-aunt Awen but DH insisted we spell it the LOTR way!

Go on - go for it!

Essie3 · 29/01/2009 20:26

Arwen you can get away with, Eowyn, no. It's not a Welsh name, it's just made up (eo combinations v. v. rare in even medieval Welsh) and as someone said wen is feminine, wyn is masculine so it's all mixed up.

Don't get me started on Gwyneth...

kayzr · 29/01/2009 21:28

I love them but I am a bit of a LOTR freak.

Would love to have a DD to call Eowyn.

MrsY · 29/01/2009 22:32

Thanks - we're not after welsh/celtic names per se, just happen to really like them. Don't think we will use them, though - maybe as middle names...

I really like Arwen, wanted it for dd but DH said no too LOTR, so dd is called Megan though so we still followed the welsh angle (I'm part welsh). BTW we didn't decide her name for definite until she was a couple of days old, we wanted to see what suited her.

Tippietoes · 17/09/2011 20:57

You are sooooooooo right, my full name is Glynis (Little Valley) and all I could think of my parents was..... HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!!!!. I hate my name and try all ideas to change it to no avail...don't do it!!!

helendigestives · 18/09/2011 14:18

Well, despite this thread being two years old, I'm going to say 'yes' to both. They're awesome names.

Nightstar · 18/09/2011 14:50

Please use one of them!! I was desperate to name a daughter Arwen, but I am a fan of the books and the films, she is so beautiful and romantic. But my husband said no, though I have hopes that one day I will change his mind.

Eowyn is slightly harder to pull off as it can't just be 'celtic' it is definitely LOTR, but so what?! She is a fierce warrior as well as a beautiful princess, what a role model!

I'm jealous you even have the option - go for it, they are wonderful names

Etaoin · 19/09/2011 01:47

Arwen it is the name of my oldest daughter.

whizzyrocket · 19/09/2011 11:26

Are they actually names beyond LoTR? If they are real-life names then why not, but otherwise... hmm.... maybe not!

But then again, Wendy didn't exist as a name before Barrie wrote Peter Pan!

I would definitely choose Arwen over Eowyn as she will have to live with it and will find it very annoying to have to constantly explain how to say it.

TrillianAstra · 19/09/2011 11:29

Old thread.

The OP has a 2 year old by now.

whizzyrocket · 19/09/2011 11:31

That's quite funny!

crazycrofter · 10/10/2011 09:22

I know the thread is two years old! - but I have an Arwen. It took me until five weeks after the birth to relent and allow her to be named Arwen as I was convinced everyone would say 'as in LOTR??' on hearing her name! In seven years, only ONE person has said that! Everyone else has assumed it's just a Welsh name. So if there's anyone else out there considering Arwen - go for it!!!!

twogirls1more · 17/10/2011 19:07

Excellent! I love it! One of my best friends has an Arwen. :) I'm pregnant with my first Son and after much careful consideration am going to name him Theodin, (slight slant on the LOTR name but we figure he can go by Theo as a child and have the choice of Theodin, Theo or Odin as a man!) DH and I both like LOTR but are far from obsessed and don't get why a name connected with it should be a big "No no?!" All names originate from somewhere and have associations attached don't they? :)

Shutupanddrive · 17/10/2011 19:10

I love love love Arwen! Ds1 would have been a
Arwen if he was a girl!

Shutupanddrive · 17/10/2011 19:10

Oh bugger who bought this two year old thread back to life?
