Starting to think there is not a girls name in the world that me and DH both like

Gone through like every girls name and either me or DH don't like it. The ONLY Name he likes is Mia (As in, Mee-a not My-a. I have a list of at least 10 that I quite like, but DH doesn't like any of them! Getting so frustrated now.

Have a short surname so ideally would like some thing at least 2-3 sylaballs.

I don't dislike Mia, but think its is top popular/common and very short. I feel a bit worried we will end up going with this just because that is the only thing DH likes. - I want to like the name!

Can you find a longer name from which the nickname could be Mia? Matilda, anything with Marie in it, Melissa, Marcia, Margarita, Melinda, Melia, Miabella, Mariella, Michaela etc

Bit of an ultimatum, only liking the one name. I would be fairly annoyed. We are not agreeing on anything too, but at least there is some middle ground we can work on.

Just posting to say I feel for you chloejessmeg. DH & I couldn't decide on a girls name either, although DH was going to relent to the one name I really liked. Fortunately our second son was born in April & we both had boys names we liked Best of luck to you.

chloejessmeg · 20/01/2009 11:22

I always like Matilda but guess what - DH doesn't.

If you don't like girls names how about something more boyish?

Charlie
Jamie
Justine
Danielle
Daniella
Roberta

daisy5 · 20/01/2009 12:00

But what about the concept that you choose a longer name that can be shortened to Mia for everyday use. Does he not like the idea?

chloejessmeg · 20/01/2009 12:01

I like girly names TBH, it is just that we can't agree on one!

Then again, when I first suggested DDs name, DH turned his nose up, which was at the beguinning of the pregnacy, but then when I suggested it again at the end he loved it (and said he had never heard it before and insists I hadn't suggested it - even though it was on the paper list!)

So Mariella too feminine?

And Michaela - just the female version of a male name....

Could you both choose a name and settle it that way?

yomellamoHelly · 20/01/2009 13:56

How about Amelia - Mia for short?

daisy5 · 20/01/2009 14:12

Emmanuelle

chloejessmeg · 20/01/2009 18:33

To be honest, I didn't know any of those names could be shortened to Mia! Amelia is quite nice. Will ask DH

bronze · 20/01/2009 18:39

We have the same problems with boy snames. due around the same time as you. good luck

chloejessmeg · 20/01/2009 18:44

Whats Esme? How do you say that? Never heard of it!

WinkyWinkola · 20/01/2009 18:44

Ez-mee

PuppyMonkey · 20/01/2009 18:53

Bit of an old fashioned one. But getting more popular.... I have one!

RiaParkinson · 20/01/2009 18:54

Miranda - call her mia

WinkyWinkola · 20/01/2009 19:26

How about:

Dulcie - means gentle and sweet in Latin

Matilda?

Layla?

Leo9 · 20/01/2009 19:36

Tell him he can have an opinion when he next carries the baby and goes through labour! IMO you get the casting vote though that might be a bit un-pc. But there would be no way on this earth I would have named my child something my DH preferred more than me!!!

What is your list of ten? Is there a name you secretly love but DH has said no to?

xxhunnyxx · 20/01/2009 19:49

God I can sympathise with you! My BF hasn't liked a single one of the girl's names I have suggested but funnily enough is yet to suggest one of his own!

Luckily I'm only 16 weeks pg so we've got a while to decide yet and we do have our boy's name sorted so in some ways I'm hoping it's a boy for the simple reason that we wont have any more stress of picking a girl's name!

One thing I've suggested we'll do if the problem doesnt get resolved nearer the time is... both writing down 10 names you quite like, even if Mia is the only name he REALLY likes tell him to think up some other names which he quite likes or doesn't mind. If any of the names match then u pick that one.

chloejessmeg · 20/01/2009 20:32

My list (off the top of my head so have probably missed quite a few) has been:
Matilda
Madeline
Layla
Kyra
Poppy
Melanie
Taya
May (if I go overdue and baby born in may!)

Sorry I know the spellings are wrong but too tired to be bothered or think straight.

He sounds like my DH who only likes one boys name - Hector - which I don't hate but don't love and one girls name - Madeleine - which I think is really pretty but reminds me of Madeleine McCann. Our daughter is called the only name we quite liked but neither of us loved. Why are men so difficult???

YesSirICanBoogie · 21/01/2009 20:33

I think you should hope he's one of these men that is so overwhelmed after labour that they'll agree to anything. Sadly, I don't have one of these DH's!

chloejessmeg · 21/01/2009 21:02

DH slept most of my labour and then when she was about to come out - he decided he needed the loo. Completely useless, honestly.
