Anneli is pretty but I think it was the name of one of the poor girls killed by the Ipswich serial killer?

If that doesn't put you off then go for it.

MmeLindt · 18/01/2009 20:31

Wasn't the little girl in Sound of Music called Gretl? I remember telling my then BF now DH that I loved the name and he ROFLed. It is a southern German granny name.

Katecat · 18/01/2009 20:50

I can?t keep up.

Right.

LaDiDaDi ? I think that?s a problem, I have a very eclectic taste, never been into a particular type of name

Wheesht ? It?s Ann-uh-lee if that makes sense, rather than Anna-Leigh which I don?t like at all.

Teafortwo ? To be honest I know little about it, I met one once, years ago and have loved it since. She had Welsh ancestry so I always assumed it was a Welsh name but things I?ve read also say it?s Scandinavian. No favourite although I?m resigned to not being able to use Jill as a first name. I guess Greta because it?s more mainstream. This is a hypothetical baby girl at the moment anyway so I?ll change my mind a hundred more times I?m sure. Thanks for the welcome by the way.

NorktasticNinja ? Thanks, I think I prefer it spelt your way too, it seems prettier somehow. Hadn?t realised there was another spelling.

Thanks again, sorry to anyone I?ve missed

All nicknames.

Jill, Gill Gillian is old and frumpy, awful.

troutpout · 18/01/2009 21:05

i love Greta ...it's beautiful
Who cares about Sound of music...personally i think you should go for a whole sound of music theme if you have subsequent children

troutpout · 18/01/2009 21:06

yes it was gretl in s.o.m

helsy · 18/01/2009 21:14

Eleri is lovely!

naturalbornmum · 18/01/2009 21:16

No don't like any of them sorry - what about Elodie?

Katecat · 18/01/2009 21:31

I can't believe I've always thought of Sound of Music when I think of Greta and it's not actually the right name! Not keen on Gretl Elodie could grow on me.

Nobody has an opinion on Kirsty then?

Ava? Laura?

OP posts:
helsy · 18/01/2009 21:37

Eva?

Horton · 18/01/2009 21:49

Greta is lovely. Anneli seems a bit twee and little girly to me and Jill is awful. Sorry.

Kirsty sounds very 80s to me. Ava is nice, but v popular if that matters to you. Laura also a bit old-fashioned (in a 70s way), IMO.

Eleri is sweet but would people think she was Ellery in a kind of surnamey way? Not sure if that would bother you.

nooka · 18/01/2009 22:03

Jill is very plain. I'd prefer it as a nickname for something a little more exciting. I have a book called Anneli the Art Hater (Anne Fine) and quite like the sound of it (but with a soft e like elephant in the middle) but written down it looks unfinished somehow. I don't like Greta, again it feels like only a bit of a name - Margarete/Margareta wold appeal more to me, but only if you have some Germanic roots.

Eleri seems a bit fantasy to me, although I know it is real Welsh name. Kirsty for some reason sounds very dated, and is also quite Scots (not that that's bad thing, but again I would expect some Scottish connection). I like Laura

Gemzooks · 18/01/2009 22:40

I like Gill or Jill. retro and quite cool. Suggests a nice girl, I think.

Greta is OK but short form of Margaret, no? So why not call her Margaret but she's known as Greta from the beginning. It sounds a bit consciously foreign and sound of musicy

Anneli I'm afraid sounds a bit rude in several other languages, cue teasing of 'anally'. Don't mean to be rude, but it's just too similar to 'anally' for my liking.

Go for Gwendolen, it's what I would call imminent DC if DH would let me!

Katecat · 18/01/2009 23:09

I've gone right off Anneli(e) with all this talk of anal and serial killers. Thanks

Jill seems to be getting more popular as the thread goes on. She'd be a 70's hairdresser type but she'd be nice! Any suggestions on a more exciting name to give Jill as a nickname Nooka?

Margaret for Greta is a good idea but I wouldn't particularly want a Maggie.

Interesting that Ava is considered popular. I don't know any, have come across a good few Eva's but never an Ava.

I initially thought "yuck" to Gwendolen but actually, Gwen is quite nice in it's own blue-rinse sort of way

Evas sorry

OP posts:
naturalbornmum · 19/01/2009 00:04

Ava is nice.

nooka · 19/01/2009 04:07

I like Gwen and Gwinny a lot, but would choose Guinevere (pronounced Gwin-i-vre) over Gwendolyn.

I dunno about what other names you could derive Jill from. Gillian is the standard, but maybe Juliana or Juliet (although Julie would be the standard). Juliana is apparently the original Latin form of Gillian. I can't think of any names with "jill" in the middle of them.

Katecat · 23/01/2009 12:46

Thanks Nooka. Juliet is going on my list. Would you pronounce Juliana as Julie-Anna or Julie-Arna?

Bumping for further opinions.

BabyBaby123 · 23/01/2009 13:55

Kirsty is awful, sorry.

No to Jill.

Don't like Greta.

Anneli is ok but it was the name of one of the prostitutes mudered in Ipswich which would put me off.... Amelie is nicer!

RachieB · 23/01/2009 22:46

Anneli sounds chavvy like Anna - Leigh!!

not keen on any of your choices sorry!

FimboRabbieBurns · 23/01/2009 22:50

I love Gillian. It was on my list.

Mammina · 23/01/2009 22:53

I really like Greta
Anneli almost seems like you've missed a bit off the end? but it's nice
Not a big fan of Jill, sorry

twosofar · 24/01/2009 09:20

Jill and Kirsty sound like girls I went to school with and I am nearer 40 than 30! A bit like calling a baby boy Ian or Graham! Nothing wrong with them but they sound totally anachronistic IMHO of course

wombleprincess · 24/01/2009 09:23

anneli is nice. isnt it short for anneliese? others not great

vess · 24/01/2009 10:33

Annelie.
Annelia?
