This is the census of everyone living in England and Wales in 1911. Great for old fashioned ideas. I tried searching for my family name and then chose the area my family originated from and up came some names I didn't care for too much:

Arthur
Cyril
Ethel
Gladys
Horace
Meredith (as a boys name)

And some I did:

Ellen
Elvie
Adeline
Ciecel
Eliza
Florence
Gwennie
Helena

Funny how some names just don't come back. Like Horace. Can't see that one coming back!

I like most of the others.

My county is not available yet.

poppydaisy · 16/01/2009 11:16

Here are some that I found:

Violet, Doris, Enid, Iris, Ethel, Mavis, Esther, Ada, Agnes, Ivy, Glenda, Edith, Nora, Nellie, Rose, Olive, Pearl, Emily, Greta, Gretchen, Martha, Dora, Alice.

Clive, Alec, Colin, Cecil, Herbert, Hubert, Quentin, Warren, Norbert, Alf, Sid, Edgar, Ted, Winston, Frederick, Benedict, Frank, Malcolm, Darren, Eugene, Wilfred.

Yes, its interesting how some 'retro' names have become more populur (Violet, Rose, Emily, Quentin, Frederick) whereas others have not (yet?).

WindUpBird · 16/01/2009 13:58

My DD's name is on your list poppydaisy! And the 3 other girls' names that were on our shortlist! And I know babies called Esther, Pearl, Nellie, Rose & Dora...

singersgirl · 16/01/2009 14:06

Both my DSs' names are on your list, Poppydaisy. And they are not called Norbert or Quentin. Interesting that Darren appears as early as 1911 - I think of it as a really 70s name.

sonniebonnie · 16/01/2009 14:37

My niece (Martha) and my nephew (Quentin) are on your list, poppydaisy!

It seems to take about 100 years for names to come back into fashion...
