Have just read 40,0001 baby names - help me choose from the final list xxx

I have just spent the last 2 hours avoiding tidying up after the Christmas relatives' departure by reading "40,001 Best Baby Names" from cover to cover and compiling my short list for the babe due in March.

Have already cut it down with DH's input, so now need to get down to final two. Do you like any of the combos we have already or can you see a better one from the names on the list?

Thanks xxx Boobz xxx

I'm sorry, I had really good intentions but there are just too many names on this thread to go through them all - you are asking a lot.

For your combos, I like the last 3 boys' ones, hate the first 3 and like Josephine Ella

Boobz · 27/12/2008 21:04

Sorry - you're right - it's a long list - although not too bad as I think I have dismissed 39,928 of the ones I read.

Will have another cull and see whether it helps.

Thanks for the advice! I love Josephine Ella as well xx

Angus - like this
Charles - ok, Charlie nice but v popular
Christian - ok, a bit too religious
Christopher (Kit) ok and urban chic
Daniel - I like this, has grown on me more since I named my own son. One that I ruled out because I believe it was too popular, then I felt jealous when my friend had one!
Dashiell - no, a bit sleb and a bit girly.
Dominic - really like this one.
Elliott - no. Maybe as a mn but not as a first name. too girly.
Gabriel - ok. Gabe is nice.
Castor - OIL. no. Caspar better!
Harry - ok, no strong like/dislike
Hector - love it, prefer Victor even more
Isaac - Ok
Joseph - OK
Kit - urban chic! quite like it.
Leo - love this, I seem to love popes' names!
Nathaniel - ok. bit long. LIke it. Nathan Daniel would be better imo
Ruben - love this. Would spell it reuben
Rudy - ok. BIT feminine, but I like it, even though it's kinda slebby and kinda urban sheeky
Tristan - God no, desperate name. Too feminine.
Zachary - like it. Prefer Gregory

Middle name:

Alexander - ok, solid normal name, can't go wrong with this as a middle name. Would flow well with a short first name
Artemus - spelling looks wrong. Is that how you spell it? I wouldn't really.
Augustus - love this! Great for mn
Benjamin - lovely mn
Bishop - no!!!!!!
Blake - ok, bit american, better than bishop though.
Edward - Good safe classic. I like it.
Henry - good mn.
James- a/a
Logan - no.
Oliver - ok, bit girly imo
Patrick - lovely, I['d upgrade this one to a first name.
Samuel - nice
Sebastian - not terribly keen

Possible combos we like so far:

Christopher (Kit) Leo Reed - like this combo
Dashiell Benjamin Reed - no
Castor Samuel Reed - no
Zachary (Zach) James Reed - like this one
Isaac Elliott Reed - ok

Ava - like this one.

Claudia - like this, like the nn Clio too!
Dasha - hmmmm, not keen
Dita - von teese. It's ok, bit of an unattractive sound imo
Ella - ok, done to death
Evangeline (a) - not keen too fussy. Eva or Eve MUCH nicer
Genevieve - no. Dancing barbie, too disney
Guinevere - OK better than above, bit try-hard, but I do still like it! wouldn't have the nerve myself! But why not?
Gwyneth - yes, I like this one. And she's been around long enough now that nobody going to think you've had your head turned by the sleb.
Hester - not pretty. Prefer Esther but not terribly keen on that either
Jocelyn - ok. Not fantastic, better names on your list
Josephine - wouldn't pick this but the nick name Posy is gorgeous
Lana - Anal. no. I like Lara though
Marianne - yes, so gorgeous. Very Jane Austen and a bit french. sO Classy.
Megan - yes, bit popular but I do still like it.
Molly - tired of this, prefer Polly by a million miles.
Mischa - no. Unlike Gwyneth, this could seem slebstalkerish. Like Mommy was an OC fan!
Natasha - ok, quite like it! Sasha is lovely.
Penelope- oh lovely!! Coould be Polly, Poppy and Penny for short. Great name.
Sasha - lovely.

Middle names:

Beatrix - lovely, strong and classic.
Elena - pretty
Ella - ok
Gabriella - lovely
Hazel - v. pretty and old lady chic
Isobel - ok
Lucy - ok
Lyra - no
Morgan - not keen, tis a boy's name
Nina - lovely, very pretty, perfect simple middle name with a stronger first name. I'd pair it with something like penelope or Beatrix

Boys first. I like Elliot Patrick as a combo. We nearly used it ourself. Also like Zachary Elliot and Dominic Elliot lots.

Boobz · 27/12/2008 21:39

Oooo thanks ladies! You have given loads of feed back - my DH is very impressed (and so am I).

From the new suggestions we have had our heads turned by:

Angus James
Isaac James
Leo Alexander

and

Sasha Gabriella

Bishop is my maiden name so was the only reason this was in - am not really serious about it me thinks.

Really starting to like Gwyneth. Also really like Dashiel still (Dash for short).

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 27/12/2008 21:43

I'm less inspired by your girls' combos. I like Hester, Natasha and Penelope as first names, but am struggling to put them with any of the middle names, from which I like Hazel best.

Maybe Penelope Hazel?

I think that you should avoid having both names ending with the same sound, like you do in your first and third combinations.

Mrs Woolf - I have indeed seen a lot of names which repeat themselves which made the task of getting through 40,000 of them slightly easier. My DH's favourite one from the book is "Moon Unit". Yep, that's in there.

Can'tSleep -- am happy to use a combo of names from any of the names really, so could use 2 of the first names instead of one from the middle name list (the only reason a particular name is on the middle name list is I don't know if I like it enough to be a first name, IFSWIM).

Still loving Josephine Ella and Gwyneth Isobel...

My new bugaboo bee (in yellow) arrived today - DH is finally excited in a girly way like me! Want a baby to put in it now...
