Am liking Zakir, Zak for short. Do you think that it ok to shorten the name?

Any opinions on the name or suggestions of others that are suitable as a western cross-over name?

sorry for hijack too....in ex h's village (muslim), they have saints, and the saints have a house. But I think this is a local tradition, left over from the long ago days of christianity. The saints looked after the village, and nobody wanted to get rid of them after they converted to islam, so the saints stayed put.

Sorry cote the actual figure I was thinking of was 124000 not 147000 however this figure is not mentioned in the quran I think it is from a hadith but I donot remember exactly which one.

CoteDAzur · 27/12/2008 08:58

That would be the number of messengers ("rasul") from Allah, not prophets ("nabi").

leothelioness · 27/12/2008 11:27

You are right cote, my mistake.
OP are you any closer to chosing a name??

SnowMuchToBits · 28/12/2008 22:32

Well Alireza's Dad I think said Ali and Reza were the first and ??seventh saint. They are Shia Muslims btw.

We have several Danyals locally. Boys names tend to get shortened, so Zak/Zakir would work too.

missymoo2411 · 29/12/2008 09:46

isnt there a version off sam some were am noy sure but new of a little boy called samiren not sure which faith it is tho but i liked it .

CoteDAzur · 29/12/2008 11:17

Snowmuch - Repeat after me:

There Are No Saints In Islam.

Ali and Reza were IMAMs. Imam does not mean "saint". Alireza's father is wrong, or perhaps just couldn't be bothered to explain it to you properly.

LiffeyeRamhairAnois · 29/12/2008 11:18

I know an Isaam, which is pronounced ee-sam. it's a good one as people too thick insular to grasp ee-sam can just say sam.

LiffeyeRamhairAnois · 29/12/2008 11:19

Love Zakir/Zak. That's a really great one.

CoteDAzur · 29/12/2008 11:20

Friends recently named their boy "Sami" which crosses over nicely imho.

How about Zaki? You can still shorten it to Zak.

festivedollyx · 29/12/2008 21:54

I know a guy called Islam it really suits him he is egyptian also know a Zak, Karim and Sam they are brothers i think they are lovely names.

SnowMuchToBits · 29/12/2008 21:56

Well, sorry, Cote, but I am only going by what Alireza's dad (an Iranian Shia Muslim) told me!

fuzzywuzzy · 29/12/2008 21:58

Zakir means rememberance or something similar, it's my dads name and he's always been called Zak by everyone.

fuzzywuzzy · 29/12/2008 22:04

Oh lots of muslim people will say muslims believe in saints, I think people who were considered holy are losely described as saints. Those called who earn the name wali are I suppose described as satins.

Muslims beleive in all the old testament prophets(pbut), we also bleievei n John the Baptiste as a prophet Sam, Saul I actually love the arabic equivelant of Saul.....

Anyway yes I rather like Zakir, and have heard it shortened to Zak.

noonki · 29/12/2008 22:05

I love samir

missymoo2411 · 30/12/2008 13:19

isreal ,(izzy) for short not sure were it comes from

Boulders · 31/12/2008 13:39

Thank you for your replies. The OH has now decided that he does not like Zakir so we are having a re-think. We already have a DS called Adam.
