I hope no one thinks I'm being rude. I love the name Solomon (Sol or Solo for short) but really helpful people keep telling me it sounds like a black mans name. Now I'm not sure I agree and I'm not sure if it matters but would it sound silly like a white Oprah or Ghandi if you get what I mean? Help! Also any middle name suggestions to go with one-sylabuled surname starting with M. (pref with initials that can be said eg SAM, to please hubby!)

Re. cross posts, if you look at the posts immediately prior to anarchyinamanger writing "X posts" there is only a tenth of a second between it and the one before, so both anarchyinamanger and expatinscotland were writing a response at the same time and didn't read what the other had written. HTH!

CoteDAzur · 26/12/2008 17:56

Solomon would be a Jewish name. Google "King Solomon".

piscesmoon · 26/12/2008 18:06

I would class it as biblical in the same bracket as Reuben and Benjamin.

TinselCoveredWILKIE · 27/12/2008 18:51

Love love love Solomon but DH not keen - we are white non-jews and no, I wouldn't think of it as a black name

I also love Malik but it is a Muslim name and we live in a heavily populated Muslim area with a lot of racism on both sides so that is a no-no too.

Boys names are HARD to pick IMO

Right. This thread has now hung around in active convos for long enough that I intend to call my next son Solomon.

savoycabbage · 27/12/2008 18:56

I definitely do think of Solomon as a black name.

Coldtits · 27/12/2008 18:58

Interesting, I know a Polish man called Sol, I wonder if he's jewish/

FrannyandZooey · 27/12/2008 18:59

the solomon i know is white and not jewish

QueenFeeUntoUsAChildIsBorn · 27/12/2008 19:10

I just think of it as a biblival name and there are lots in the top 100 presumably both black and white.
It's a lovely name. Like it shortened to Sol - will now be asking hbby what he thinks of this for our baby I like it that much

Frizbe · 27/12/2008 19:13

No I wouldn't assume any colour from a name or gender for that matter!

ScottishMummy · 27/12/2008 19:14

all the sol's i know are white jewish male

slavetomykids · 27/12/2008 19:26

I wouldn't see Solomon as a 'black' mans name. Nor would I especially see the name as Jewish. It was my great grandads name, white, working class, baptist northerner.

ScottishMummy · 27/12/2008 19:39

essentially pick a name because you like, you wont please everyone.so why try.

EightiesChick · 27/12/2008 22:58

The only Solomon I can think of in public life (don't know any personally) is Sol Campbell but I would, like others, think of it as Jewish, though not enough to put off anyone using it if they aren't Jewish. Tons of Old Testament names get used across the board now. I wonder of the parents of all the Isaacs, Reubens or Elis that are around get the same response?

I would use it if you like it, it's a nice name.
