Ok, meant to ask this when I asked about my possible DS name of Herbie but now - what do you think of Mabel? Not even sure if this is the correc spelling yet - heard it last week and love it.

Pinkmarshmallow · 18/12/2008 22:44

Thanks all - pro and against - much prefer an honest opinion - even if it is bad!! I still think I like it - I am a ponce anyway so it seems like it will be just right!

I love it too

Although for some bizarre reason, it's a name I associate with a cow...you know, like 'Neddy' as a classic horse, 'Kitty' for a cat and 'Fido' for a dog. But that def wouldn't put me off...it's a v sweet name (& it's a v sweet Jersey sort of cow that I picture...poss with a straw hat & a flower in its mouth!!!)

Martha is nice but in my job we get a lot of kids' birth certificates sent through...& certainly in my area, Martha is fast becoming one of the most common names for little girls. Mabel, however, I only saw one of all this year

Like it - but reminds me of a tv show where they said they called their daughter mabel as Mothers Always Bring Extra Love

MadreInglese · 19/12/2008 16:32

My mum used to childmind a little girl called Amabel (prounced like Annabel but with a M) which is apparently a derivative of Mabel. I always thought it was pretty.

BoyMeetsWorld · 19/12/2008 16:34

PLUS for anyone saying it's too old ladyish....if she grows up to feel the same, she can always shorten it to Mae or Bel...or even Bella if she wanted to - plenty of 'trendier' options there

SAEJ · 19/12/2008 17:22

Yup, still think I am sold on it - BoyMeetsWorld - you must see some AMAZING names if you get to review birth certificates - am glad to see Mable is still unusual - am going to use a more ordinary middle name - possibly Sarah so she can always use that if she hates Mabel!

Hmmm.. I like it but i wouldn't use it. Cute on a 3 year old, not so on a 13 year old.

Turniphead1 · 19/12/2008 17:31

Love it.

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 19/12/2008 19:35

I like it.

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 19/12/2008 19:37

I don't see how why it wouldn't work on a 13 yr old. How is it different from Annabel or Isabel? WE're just more used to those ones on people who don't have a tartan rug over their knees.

LynetteScavo · 19/12/2008 20:46

Not so long ago peopel would have been @ Edith or Violet...Mable is very up and comming.

ramonaquimby · 19/12/2008 20:49

all time fave girl's name

(sigh......and I have 3 dd's.....none called Mabel......bigger sigh...!)

nkf · 19/12/2008 20:54

I think it will be popular in the next few years. That's my prediction anyway. To my mind, it's okayish but I think there are prettier names.

ceeceeanne · 20/12/2008 10:25

I love Mabel but have a surname starting with M so am being put off. Cant believe it is becoming popular! Thought i'd found an uncommon name!

Tortington · 20/12/2008 10:35

i like mabel, but it was my grans name and my great was a queen amongst bitter and twisted cows.

BoyMeetsWorld · 20/12/2008 12:14

ramonaquimby Oh pleeeeeeeeeease have another little ds and call him Mabel lol!!

audley · 20/12/2008 13:08

Love Mabel and rather like Maybelle spelling for nn's and is pretty. Not sure which spelling I'd go with tbh, Mabel is on my shortlist...

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 20/12/2008 13:10

How come Mabel is ok but nobody like Quintus?

(Yes I AM still sulking days later)

I keep suggesting Ada as well but nobody will listen to me

sorkycake · 20/12/2008 13:25

"maybe it's Maybelline"

don't ask, I don't know why, it's the first thing I thought of.
