DP and I can't agree on boys names

Some of the names I like are Oliver, Noah, Isaac, Oscar, Archie, Edward.

DP doesn't like any of them and says they're all too popular so he'd like a name that not many children are called. So his list consists of names like Alan, Paul, Graham, Gregory, Mark.

They're all fine and I know of people our age with those names, but I just can't imagine calling our child by one of them!

Can anyone think of any names which might suit both our tastes??

(I'm hoping its a girl to avoid all the arguments discussions, because we can actually agree on a girls name!)

It's also a name that doesn't get used that much these days, but is solidly 'normal' a la the OP's DH's preference.

how about Ned?

ScummyMummy · 14/11/2008 21:46

smellyeli - (insert chosen name)

(insert chosen name) - Rocks! From now on I'm going to name all my children (insert chosen name)!

op - that could have beenme posting!

I just kept going and we have finally agreed on Alfie Zack

ScummyMummy · 14/11/2008 21:48

ingles2 - "how about Ned?"

How about just leaving him outside a police station in a suitcase?

combustiblelemon · 14/11/2008 21:50

I don't think Gregory is that bad- I kind of like it atually. Your names are all lovely, but your DH is right, very popular. Names come and go out of fashion. In 30 years time your bump could be saying to their DP that they don't want a popular name, but would rather have Oliver, Noah, Isaac, Oscar, Archie or Edward.

What about Zebedee, gorgeous name IMHO

singyswife · 14/11/2008 21:53

What about Sam????

girlandboy · 14/11/2008 21:54

Zebedee? Boing! Magic Roundabout

ButterflyBessie · 14/11/2008 21:55

Zebedee is such a strong name that it can ride out the magic roundabout and stand out on it's own

girlandboy · 14/11/2008 22:02

Zebedee IS a strong name. Goes with his strong spring here

ingles2 · 14/11/2008 22:21

Oi Scummy, Ned's a GREAT name!
leave him outside a police station indeed

singyswife · 14/11/2008 23:02

Am still rooting for Sam?

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions - I didn't get a chance to come back and look yesterday. DP did mention last night that he quite likes Lewis, Sam and Frederick (but not Fred or Freddie!)

I do quite like Sam/Samuel/Sammy as well but we do have a close friend with a DS called Sam. No sure whether or not that's an issue. Although that seems to negate DP's argument about not liking popular names - surely Sam is quite popular?

I've never thought about Saul - it doesn't immediately grab me, but I don't dislike it - might think about that one and see what DP says! Also Johnny is nice - DS has a friend called Johnny at nursery who it really suits. DP says that we'd have to officially name it the full name though (i.e. Jonathan) and then its up to everyone if they want to use the shortened version!

DP has now decided he does like Edward but doesn't want to use it because there is already an Edward in his side of the family (he has a huge family so this makes it easy for him to discount quite a lot of names - including Oscar because his parents once had a dog called that!)

It's so difficult! Sometimes you just like or don't like a name but can't really say why.

Amusingly, I was talking about names to my mum the other night and she said most people dislike their own names anyway. I said that I quite liked mine and she said 'Really??! Oh we went off it quite soon after we'd given it to you!'

I like most of your names (except Archie, too many Archies and Alfies around at the moment!) but your DH has appalling taste in names!
