Not a baby, but please help with niece's identity crisis

Her name is Alexandra, but she has never really used it. Family, friends, even teachers called her by a pet name from day one, but now that she's off to secondary school she feels that it's a bit babyish (she's got a point, it was fine when she was a baby, but certainly not a cool teenage name and bears no resemblance to Alexandra).

She thinks Alexandra is a bit of a mouthful, and it doesn't seem "her". However, she HATES Alex or Alexa.

It sounds silly, but it is really getting her down. Please, wise MNs, help her find something that will suit her better.

Sexy lexie -asking for trouble?

Sandy is nice and is proper shortening of Alexandra.

How about initials as a nickname?

shamlessripoffmerchant · 14/11/2008 10:22

Sasha is the traditional Russian diminuitive of Alexandra (Its also Obama's daughter's name).

Buda · 14/11/2008 10:26

Ali - nice, sharp, feminine and not babyish.

Twims · 14/11/2008 10:32

My godsister Alexandra is an Ali

allyspice · 14/11/2008 10:41

Wow, thanks for all the responses!

I think she would like to go with Ali, but her dad and brother are both Alasdair, and it's confusing enough with 2 Ali's in the house. Like Lexi and Sasha though, will definitely suggest those.

Her baby name is Tot (or Tottie ) so really not the image she wants to project to cool new friends.

I thought Obama's Sasha was really Natasha.

scotlass · 14/11/2008 10:52

I think Lexie sounds very grown up and cool! (But then I'm 36 so she might disagree )

ByTheSea · 14/11/2008 11:18

Allie or Lexie (I like both a lot)

Lexi is very cool, or Zanda, but Alexandra is a beautiful name.

shitehawk · 15/11/2008 23:25

I went to school with an Alexis who variously called herself Leckie or Lexie. Both suited her and she felt very comfortable with them. She calls herself Allie now.

nappyaddict · 15/11/2008 23:59

What is her middle name?

ravenAK · 16/11/2008 00:02

Xandra a la Xandra Rhodes?
