Bob or Bertie - short for Robert?

Assuming Robert is a done deal, so no need to suggest other proper names.

Have thought about Rob or Robbie but it doesn't do much for me.

I like Bobby.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/11/2008 22:11

I have known a Robin who is really a Robert IYSWIM

Bobby is rather sweet

LynetteScavo · 07/11/2008 22:12

Bertie = very cool. Love it!

jellybeans · 07/11/2008 22:35

Love Bertie and know a very special little boy with that name x

AbbeyA · 07/11/2008 22:36

I like Rob but hate Bertie or Bob. I wouldn't shorten it at all.

Plonker · 07/11/2008 22:37

Bertie!! Über cool!

Liffey · 07/11/2008 22:39

I love Robbie. Bertie sounds deliberately comical in a cruel way to me.

Liffey · 07/11/2008 22:39

Bobby cute though.

zaphod · 07/11/2008 22:45

We use Bob, Rob, and occasionally Bert. (Okay, only I call him Bert). And often, Bobert. Can't say we'll call him that when he goes to secondary though.

Lilyloo · 07/11/2008 22:53

DP Robert we call him Bob , the kids nieces etc call him Bobby and for work he uses Rob !
The dc quite proud their dad is called Bob

Lilyloo · 07/11/2008 22:53

Please use Bob! It's such a cool name.

BuwchBywiog · 08/11/2008 15:17

Dp won't answer to Robert only Rob I usually call him plonker also know a Robin who is actually a Robert.

Bertie is cool

RachieB · 08/11/2008 15:18

hate bertie ! Robbie or Bobby is cute

unknownrebelbang · 08/11/2008 15:24

Robbie I love (but am biased).

Bobbie reminds of a lad from my youth, so no.

I quite like Bertie, although it's not something I considered (DS2 is a Robert).

DH is called Rob by me, Bob at work, and is sometimes called Ben .

2Helenback · 08/11/2008 20:45

Dh is Robert, I call him Rob, but his parents always called him Robert (more precisely, Our Robert)

Fil was Robert also but was a Bob. I think Bob / Rob is a generational thing.

My Godson is Robert and is the only one of 3 siblings with a name that can actually be shortened. He therefore gets called 'Robsy-Bobsy' which must stop before puberty!

I have suggested Robert shortened to Bertie for our bump iof is a boy, but Dh reckons not as Sil had a Jack Russell called Bert.

Kate Bush called her son Bertie. Bertie Bush. Hmmm

Bobbalou is another pet name I have heard for Roberts. How versatile is Robert eh!?

MrsTitchmarsh · 08/11/2008 20:57

Dp is a Robert, alot of people call him Rob (which I'm not keen on) he prefers just Robert or more recently Bert.

FIL is also Robert and gets Bob, so dp never gets that. I forbid it!

mummyplonk · 08/11/2008 21:01

My brother is Robert - known as "Unkie Bob-Bob" with my little-uns - friends call him "Bertie", is a lovely name as people tend to choose their own personal favourites for it.

mickeylou · 09/11/2008 10:49

i love bobby.

2Helenback · 09/11/2008 19:46

I have an aversion to Bobby, as in the comedy 'Still Game' this appears to be Scottish slang for a penis, pronounced 'Boaby' or something like that. Perhaps a real Scot can leap in here and clarify?

Twims · 09/11/2008 19:46

Love Bobby and Bertie

Trebuchet · 09/11/2008 19:49

Bertie is a fabulous name I love it! I am also totally biased!

Flum · 09/11/2008 22:37

This is a great response! Mummyplonk, love that everyone chooses their own name. I should stop worrying aboutit.

I have kinda got used to Bob the Baby now. Can't make Bertie stick but do still like it.

Boberty is proving fun.
DD1 won't be moved from Bobby
DD2 calls him Boy
DH calls him Bob
MIL calls him Robert
I call him Bertie, Bobby and Bob

it really is endless. ah well, will see where it lands.

Thanks for all the replies.
Lovin the dichotomous attitudes to Bertie and Bob
