My dd is called Esme and I have endless trouble with people mispronouncing it...would you pronounce it EsME or EsMAY?

Answers on a postcard, please...

I'll post later on with the "correct" version (or at least the one I consider to be correct)

JackieNo · 28/09/2008 20:53

EsME. Unless it had an accent on the second e.

ruddynorah · 28/09/2008 20:53

esme not may and slightly a soft z rather than an s

CristinaTheAstonishing · 28/09/2008 20:53

I'd say Esme but the two little Esmes I've met their mum pr it Esmay.

Blandmum · 28/09/2008 20:53

Ez me

AnarchyAunt · 28/09/2008 20:54

Not either exactly!

Closer to EsMay but less of an 'ay' sound on the end. IYSWIM?

hecate · 28/09/2008 20:54

Ez-may

shakennotstirred · 28/09/2008 20:54

Ohhhh fast response - wasn't expecting that!

Shall I say now?

It's EsME (yep, with a soft Z sound rather than an S).

Ez-Mee

shakennotstirred · 28/09/2008 20:56

The thing that winds me up is someone will say:

Them: "Ahhh bless her, what's her name"

Me: "EsME"

Them: "Oh EsMAY what a lovely name!"

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

pointydog · 28/09/2008 20:56

pointydog · 28/09/2008 20:57

depends if you're trying to pronounce it with a french accent

fryalot · 28/09/2008 20:58

I knew an Esme who pronounced it EzMAY

islandofsodor · 28/09/2008 20:58

All the Esme's I know are pronounced Ezmay

ruddynorah · 28/09/2008 20:58

honestly don't worry about it. happens with my name all the time.

shakennotstirred · 28/09/2008 20:58

Should have said at the beginning there's no accent on the second E

Hulababy · 28/09/2008 20:59

Es Me (although would probably sound more like Mi rather than Me due to accent, etc.)

shakennotstirred · 28/09/2008 20:59

It kind of makes me regret choosing the name IYSWIM...I don't want her having to correct people all of her life. I just assumed Esme was obvious, but it would appear not

EZ-MEE without the accent. EZ-MAY with.
