Maggie is one of a range of nice diminuitives of Margaret. I would not use it as a name in it's own right (I really dislike shortenings used as given names)

Cadelaide · 20/09/2008 23:23

Nah.

Servalan · 20/09/2008 23:29

I'm not usually a fan of dimuntives as names in their own right, and I'm another child of the 80s who is most definitely NOT a fan of Thatcher.

However, I know a lovely 2 y.o. Maggie. The name suits her really well, and is really quite cool in fact. I'm surprised how much I like it cos of the above!!

Also, I know a grown up Margaret who calls herself Mags - I like that as well

debzmb62 · 20/09/2008 23:41

Servalan · 21/09/2008 00:03

Why thank you nooka

nuthacuppatea · 21/09/2008 10:28

I like it alot. I have a Maddy (Madeleine)who I sometimes call Maggie when the mood takes me. (Shall be sorry for this when she starts confusing her d's for g's!). I'm not keen don't like Margaret as know too many grumpy old ladies by this name, so I would use Maggie as a name in it's own right. Or if you want something longer to shorten it from then Magdalen / Magdalain(a). As for Maggie Simpson, she's a very cute star shaped intelligant baby as far as cartoon characters go so I wouldn't worry 'bout that.

themildmannneredjanitor · 21/09/2008 10:29

thatcher

MrsMattie · 21/09/2008 10:29

Quite sweet. Not keen on Margaret, though.

lolianja · 21/09/2008 15:06

I really like it.

I'm not keen on Margaret, sounds a tad frumpy, but Margo and Margarita are gorgeous names. Despite my huge penchant for very common names I'd consider Margo/Margarita for a middle name for a girl.

RubySlippers · 21/09/2008 15:09

maggie - like it

maggie tulliver from The Mill on The Floss is a bit of a heroine of mine

rebeccahill · 21/09/2008 17:12

i know a maggie and it's a really lovely kid's name. not sure about when she's older though. and you might get people automatically assuming it's short for margaret.

AuntieMaggie · 21/09/2008 17:15

DD1 is Maggie (Margaret) - so obviously I love it!

JacobsPrincess · 21/09/2008 22:11

Love it. It's our girls name if I ever turn one out (2 ds's currently!)

Aero · 21/09/2008 22:23

Margaret is a middle name for me (after my Granny who was known as Peggy) and having hated it as a child, I have to admit it's really grown on me over the years. I actually like all the derivitives of Margaret though anyway and I think Maggie is sweet.
