I like this name but when I've mentioned it to friends, it gets the thumbs down. Would love some opinions!

My rabbit was called Clemency, when I named her (was 13 or so) I don't think I knew the word as such, it was just a pretty name to me

seeker · 08/09/2008 22:42

I love it. I started a one woman campaign a while ago on here to try to get someone to use it, but failed miserably!

cadelaide · 08/09/2008 22:45

Lovely name.

DSs middle name is Clement, wish we'd been brave enough to use it as his first name.

GrimmaTheNome · 08/09/2008 22:46

I think it sounds nice. If the americans can nick our town names for their babes why can't we nick some of their legal terminology (given that its a nice term like mercy)

Surely not Clementine, thats a fruit. She'd get called satsuma or tangerine. She'd certainly never be able to use fake tan!

Awful! Too tied in with death row and the Bankok Hilton.

MerryMarigold · 09/09/2008 07:35

Ha ha ha. Has Cher really got a kid called Chastity? I'm sure she's been a great example in that area! I don't like the virtue names at all, imagine being saddled with 'having to be' that for the rest of your life. And if you're just giving a name because it sounds pretty then don't give a name with such an obvious meaning.

macaco · 09/09/2008 07:47

oooh no.

poshtottie · 09/09/2008 07:48

I looked after a baby called Clemency, I really like it.

SummerLightning · 09/09/2008 13:46

I have a good (male) friend called Clem. He says he got picked on a bit at school for his name but now he likes it cos it's unusual and easy to get e-mail addresses! He is a bit of a character though so I could never use the name myself, would always think of him!

stillstanding · 09/09/2008 13:48

Pretty but I prefer Clementine, I think

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 09/09/2008 15:17

It's what people on death row ask for.

bamboostalks · 09/09/2008 15:20

Lovely name! Effie I long for those Chalet School Days as well, Margot, Constance and Helena! I used to dream I would have triplets and call them that.

EffiePerine · 09/09/2008 15:25

I suggest Constance (shortened to Con of course) as a girl's name to DH but he turned it down (grr)

here you go Bamboo

OrmIrian · 09/09/2008 15:29

I like. Agree with effie though that Constance is nice too. Now you see I think that Clementine is odd- it's a fruit and a cheesy old song

Clemency is no different to Verity, Valerie etc as a girls name.

EffiePerine · 09/09/2008 15:30

I like Verity as well so ner

and Hope

TheSmallClanger · 09/09/2008 21:47

Verity and Hope are nice. Clemency sounds a bit odd and looks strange written down, although there is a lovely Betjeman poem about Clemency the General's Daughter.

I like Clementine better.

WendyWeber · 09/09/2008 21:57

Having read Susan Hill's book Family, I love it.

After her eldest daughter Jessica, & several miscarriages, she later had a very prem daughter called Imogen, who sadly died; but then had another, who she called Clemency, and I associate that with optimism & joy

It's a very pretty name actually!

LittlePushka · 09/09/2008 22:00

Love it! Love it! Love it!!!

I have only known one person in all of my life with this name so it would be is very individual for your DD and I think that it a great start for her!

Not sure about Ferrity Verity and Clementine always has to be preceded by, "Oh me darlin'..."

chunglimum · 09/09/2008 22:01

I love it. My friend's daughter is Clemency, Clem for short and it's lovely.
