I honestly really love the name agnes, but because my grandma was called agnes and hated it, "Only bloomin' maids are called agnes or maiden aunts why could my mother not give me another name!" She was 72 when she said this so mmm..... best not call my wee one that then!

Anais is french but not related to Annis apparantly.

The french version of Agnes is Agnes with an accent on the e so very similar and pronounced anyes iyswim.

I think naming a child Agnes and then insisting people pronounce it the French way is even more pretentious - an I'm sure people would pronounce it the English way anyway!

The names Agnes and Rachel have the same meaning. Do you like Rachel?

milene · 03/09/2008 18:22

Actually, my name is Rachel I'd not thought that the meanings are the same - I guess one is Hebrew and the other Greek in origin?
