oh dear I'll show this to dp. I didn't think of the sti. Lydia always does well in threads and nobody mentions the sti.

Yes, I love Lydia and it was on the shortlist, made it down to the final 3. One of the few names we both loved, knew nobody else whose child was called Lydia, only one way of spelling it, sounded good with the sur name....... BUT... one person said chlamydia to me and I had my doubts.

Storm in a tea cup. Probably should have ignored them.

catweazle · 23/08/2008 13:56

Phyllis?! You can't be serious

(How about Gladys, Doris or Beryl )

MrsMattie · 23/08/2008 14:58

Phyllida - an STI?

Phyllis - dreadful.

Nettee · 23/08/2008 15:06

Oh no everyone - Phyllida is my mum's name and I think it is really pretty. also quite unusual - she doesn't meet anyone else with the same name very often. Emma Thompson's mum is an actress called Phyllida. I suppose there is the problem of people spelling it wrong alot. Someone she knows calls her Philly and she doesn't like that. her parents called her Phylla as a short name which always sounded affectionate but I suppose it is a bit like filler which isn't so good. The whole STI thing does ring a bell with stories from her school days now I come to think about it but syphilis is not that well known about by school children anymore is it? Anyway I am not really doing a very good job of selling it am I? hmmmm I still like it though!

Flier · 23/08/2008 15:12

when i hear or see phyllidia, i think of an sti, i'm afraid.

Much prefer Lydia.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 23/08/2008 15:14

Much prefer Phillippa.

JackieNo · 23/08/2008 15:24

Not keen on Phyllis, but I love Phyllida - I think of Phyllida Law the actress, who's lovely.

Botbot · 29/08/2008 21:03

Phyllis was my nana's name. Ripe for a revival, I reckon.

LynetteScavo · 29/08/2008 21:05

In the real world I would do this

ithinkimtallandblonde · 29/08/2008 21:27

Aaarrgh please please don't do it, they wont thank you, little girls like pretty names try a compromise think of all those years at school with there peers.

WickedBitchoftheEast · 29/08/2008 23:44

Ooohhh that is so not nice to do that to a child !

Did you want it to begin with P or just an old fashioned name that was not popular/well used ?

WickedBitchoftheEast · 29/08/2008 23:53

Lydia is nice but reminds me of Lydia Bennett (Jane Austen)

pamelat · 31/08/2008 18:04

I like Phyllis (the old names are back)

Phyllida sounds like a sexual disease, sorry!

pamelat · 31/08/2008 18:06

I wanted to call our DD Elsie but received a similar reaction in RL to what you are doing here.

I think Phyllis is pretty and its no more old fashioned than Martha etc (know lots of baby Marthas)

Hulababy · 31/08/2008 18:11

I am not keen on either Phyllis and Phyllida, sorry.
