Hi all we're expecting our 2nd baby in 6 weeks and don't know if its a boy or girl.

We already have 1 ds, Harry, and are pretty set on George William for a boy although I really like Toby/Tobias William - which do you think goes best with Harry? Dh likes names that can't be shortened

We both really like Tess for a girl however not keen on the formal version e.g. Teresa, do you think Tess stands well on its own? Full name would be Tess Elisabeth Edwards.

The only other thing thats putting me off is someone said its a teasable name e.g. Ten Ton Tess or Tess-Tickle - what do you think, are there any other Tess's out there that have had that kind of teasing??

Many thanks in advance!

Lovely name

gauly · 08/08/2008 21:09

I have a Tessa, often called Tess so I'm going to vote for it. I think Tessa might work better with a vowel sound after it otherwise I think "Tess Elizabeth" sounds like "Tessa Lizabeth" which is kind of wrong.

I've noticed that for my other children who also have normal, but not terribly popular name the usual reaction is "Oh that's nice". When people hear Tessa's name the reaction is either "Oh I love that name!" or ... long pause ... "Oh... that's ... unusual". I think it's a bit of a "marmite" name - you either love it or hate it.

I have heard Tess as a shortening for Esther too, though Esther Elizabeth Edwards may be just too many E's for one small girl.

yes, that's right Gauly. It is the short form of Esther. Tess or Tessa, both short for Esther.

I really liked Tess and then my friend said it was a dog's name so have rather gone off it.

Have decided not to disclose potential names to real life people in case it happens again. Only post potentials on MN.

I have never met a dog called Tess.
I have never met anyone nicknamed "Ten Ton Tessie"
I have never read Tess of D'Urbevilles.

I have no associations with the name, and I love it.

But I hate Theresa. Maybe because I went to a Catholic school, and have associations with many (none of whom were abbreviated to Tess).

I have a Harry and wanted George if dd2 was a boy!

TwoWindyDays · 09/08/2008 17:13

not keen on Tess/a but love Elizabeth!

ScummyMummy · 09/08/2008 17:16

I really like the name Tess. And think it's fine as a stand alone name. No need for Tessa and certainly not Theresa, imo.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 09/08/2008 17:32

I love it. One of my friends has a dd called Tess. Only Tess I know and think its a great name.

CozISaidSo · 09/08/2008 21:01

Thanks for all your comments, I've never read Tess of the D'Urbevilles so no associations for me there. I think we're going to go for it so Tess it is, thanks again!!

Love Tess/Tessa. Hate Theresa - reminds me of a horrible flat mate I had. Toby is nice too.

cluttercup · 25/08/2008 15:28

Tess - love it!

3andnomore · 25/08/2008 15:30

Tessa rather than Tess for me....

Nellybell · 26/08/2008 13:53

I am thinking of Tess too, i thinks its a lovely name. Although I did see on TV last night that the BBC are showing Tess of the D'urbervilles during Autumn and I wondered if it might start getting really popular. Typical!

Bicnod · 26/08/2008 19:28

One of my best friends is called Tess - her full name is Tessa but she pretty much just uses Tess... love them both
