What do people think of Toby or Tobias and which is best to go for?

I am really keen but DH says it's a cat's name - sigh. Then my dad said 'toby jug' and someone else said 'toby carvery'. Great!! LOL

My friends gorgeous, tall, intelligent, witty, successful 24 year old son is called Tobias.
What more recommendation do you need

It can be Tobias (which her son is known as), Toby (which would not suit him tbh) or tobes.

how is Tobias pronounced - TO-BYE-AS or TO-BEE-AS?

I prefer the first over the second, but I don't know which is correct

izzybiz · 06/08/2008 22:57

My Toby will be 16 at Christmas, Its my most favourite boys name ever!!

Hi nickname is Tubs, he has been that since a tiny tot, even some of his school teachers call him Tubs!

I call him Tobias sometimes, fantastic names!

There's a Tobias at the school I work at, but it never gets shortened to Toby - probably because there's a Toby in the same class.

Toothache · 06/08/2008 23:06

My ds is Toby... not Tobias. My Mum did say "you better hope he doesn't have sticky out ears" lol... and thankfully he doesn't. Don't know any other Toby's though.

floaty · 08/08/2008 23:01

I have a Toby but he is a Tobias not sure why as he is never called Tobias ,he is at school with several Tobys some are Tobias and some not.Have one friend with a Tobias and they call him Bias sometimes ,although actually when they get to secondary school I think most will be Toby,I also call mine Tobes and he gets called Toast by some of his friends!

Habbibu · 08/08/2008 23:04

It's the name of an aubergine (see treacletart's post...)

ethanchristoper · 17/08/2008 23:01

toby

if you call dc tobias he'll get called toby anyway and unless you plan to send him to a private school he'll get piss taken out of him like my cousin and my friend

toby is nicer than tobias imo anyway

mabel1973 · 18/08/2008 14:50

i used to work with a Toby, he got called toboggan or toblerone!
I do know a cat and a dog called toby though

LittleMissBliss · 18/08/2008 14:55

I know two Tobys and one Tobias, known as Toby. I think i have all called the Tobes at one point. But i prefer Toby. I think it's a lovely name!

LittleMissBliss · 18/08/2008 14:59

*I have called all of them Tobes at one point. FFS whats wrong with me!

TheBestMum · 18/08/2008 15:10

We've got a Toby & have always, always loved the name. I shorten it to Tobes too & love that. Never liked Tibias - too biblical.
Only met a few other Toby's too - bit unusual & that's great.

wellbalanced · 19/08/2008 10:36

When a friend of a friend told us about their new Toby, first my husband said was Toby jug!! So from that im not keen!

hw2004 · 21/08/2008 12:39

Oooh, guess what? DH has suddenly said he is warming to Toby and I can have it if I want it. Toby Alexander? Typical - now i can have it I don't know what to do - lol.

OP posts:
wordgirl · 21/08/2008 14:15

I think that's a great name. But then my DS2 is Toby Alexander so maybe I'm a bit biased!

mamadiva · 21/08/2008 14:20

My dog is called Tobias/Toby and Tobes

JRocks · 21/08/2008 14:58

I like it. Would prob use Tobias as proper name then shorten to Toby. I have a friend called Toby, not sure whether he's Tobis or not, but he uses it sometimes. He's Not Posh

brimfull · 21/08/2008 14:59

lovely name

custardyellow · 21/08/2008 15:03

I would use Toby as a nickname for Tobias only.

custardyellow · 21/08/2008 15:03

..wouldn't use Toby on its own.

mumoftwinz · 21/08/2008 15:25

One of mine is Toby (for short and Tobias for formal etc). Just started school - dont know any other Toby's
