Am asking for someone else, so be brutal, I'll summarise!

My DD is Saskia, we have a dreadful Dutch surname and felt this was pretty enough to not be overpowered by it.

Just after she was born there was an Eastender called this who got killed with an ashtray? I don't watch it but many people asked if she was named after this charachter .

I used to just retort, "No after Rembrant's mistress." generally shut them up

Love it.
Russian name deriving from 'Alexandra'.
More commonly known as Danish, meaning 'people'.

benandoli · 31/07/2008 14:27

It sounds a bit harsh to me, sorry like a bitch in the making though could be lovely if she is a lovely person

wahwah · 31/07/2008 15:08

Ooh, good comments on the whole. Thank you everyone and keep them coming!

It makes me curl my lip but that's only because
my boyfriend snogged one behind my back and I adored him.

It does sound like Alaska, therefore seems angular and pointy and cold. She was angular, and cold, actually I can't seperate the name from her, ignore me.

gladders · 31/07/2008 15:16

funny that it's short for alexandra... we know a saskia with a little brother called alexander.....

lovelysongbird · 31/07/2008 16:55

beautiful name unusual yet not wacky
reminds me of that girl in eastender though.
love it.
i can't imagine there being loads of saskias in your dds class.

Fimbo · 31/07/2008 16:58

It is my niece's middle name - I like it

lovelysongbird · 31/07/2008 17:00

ohh tell me more about Rembrant's mistress

loobylu3 · 31/07/2008 17:42

I think it is very pretty and quite unusual also without being modern and made up!

noonki · 31/07/2008 17:58

I always thought it was rembrants wife, ,y parents lied! - same name as my sis - I love it - she is not sloaney though people def. have that conatation(sp) with it

MarmadukeScarlet · 31/07/2008 18:23

Sorry, yes my mistake, he was married to Saskia for 8 years until her death.

It was his second 'wife' (Starts with H - difficult to spell/pronounce) that he didn't actually marry.

Strangely, none of the folk asking if I'd named her after 'Saskia off Eastenders, who got done in with the ashtray' ever pulled me up on my incorrect marital status .

hatrick do you shorten the name at all?
to sasky or kia or anything?

lovelysongbird · 01/08/2008 09:40

agree with what you said about it says more about anyone that watches bb, than the name.
maybe its because its an unsual name it stands out

bamboostalks · 01/08/2008 09:45

Good name, good vibes, don't think that you can pigeonhole that type of name.

i like the fact its not that popular.

JulesJules · 01/08/2008 09:54

I love it, my DD loves it and wishes she had been called Saskia! Really pretty imo, although I don't watch BB or Eastenders so it doesn't have those associations for me.

wahwah · 01/08/2008 15:39

Thank you all very much for your thoughts. Now all my friend has to do is produce a girl and get her husband to agree to the name.

MarmadukeScarlet · 01/08/2008 22:54

Jules, my dd who is Saskia wishes she was a Tabitha - just no pleasing some!

lunamoon2 · 02/08/2008 22:22

I think Saskia is a lovley name, sounds quite exotic!

SlothyMcFrothy · 02/08/2008 22:23

Saskia always reminds me of the girl who was murdered with an ashtray in eastenders
