Could I have your opinions on the folowing baby name short list please?

Quite like something unusual but quite classic for a girl but have come to the conclusion that am not comfortable giving a boy anything non traditional!

So far we have:

Girls:
Eliza
Cecily
Matilda
Sylvie

Boys:
Henry
Benjamin
Max
Nico (trying to please DH)!

I like them all except Nico (who, to me, is a German woman singing with the Velvet Underground)

I wouldn't try and talk you out of any of these, even tho some aren't what I'd have chosen for my DCs(just as my DCs' names probably wouldn't be to your taste). I do like them all. Go with your heart!

EffiePerine · 22/07/2008 06:57

well I'd say siss - i - lee

but there you go

Egg · 22/07/2008 07:04

I would choose Eliza from your list of girls, and I have a Benjamin so that is clearly the obvious choice from the boys (but like all except Nico, which is ok but not my cup of tea, prob because I know one who is a bit of an a*se!).

Despite me worrying Ben/Benjamin was too popular my Benjamin is the only one at his nursery (about 50 children in total).

Egg · 22/07/2008 07:06

BTW, I would pronounce Cecily sessilee. I would have thought that Effie's proununciation is the country, Sicily?

EffiePerine · 22/07/2008 10:16

maybe more like siss - e - lee?

like Cecil (the surname) if that makes sense

anyway doesn't make any difference, still a lovely name

Zebraa · 22/07/2008 10:23

I like Matilda when shortened to Tilly. Henry is such a lovely name.

sannie · 22/07/2008 10:25

like cecily and matilda from the girls list. I have a henry myself so this is my fav

TheMuppetMuggle · 22/07/2008 10:28

Twinkie1 · 22/07/2008 11:29

Eliza - cute but not Liz for short
Cecily - nice
Matilda - nice but common as everyone likes Tilly for short
Sylvie - nooooo granny name

Boys:
Henry - nice
Benjamin - nice
Max - the best is DSs name
Nico (trying to please DH)! - only if you foreign or will look weird.

pointydog · 22/07/2008 11:35

Matilda and Max the best

Eliza - can only think of My Fair LAdy
Cecily - hard to say, sissy
Sylvie - if you;'re fremch

Henry - too Brideshead for me
Benjamin - Ben's ok-ish
Nico - if you're italian, or like Velvet Underground and female

Squarah · 22/07/2008 12:08

I think meeja = media names i.e. trendy amongst media types. does that sound right?

I love Matilda (my DH said no!) and Henry (ditto) - would he be a Harry then? (as in the prince?!)

Alishanty · 22/07/2008 14:48

Really like Eliza, Cecily and Matilda have considerede these myself.

For biys from your list I would probably say Max or Benjamin.

Cies · 22/07/2008 15:28

Personally, I like your boys choices more than the girls (except Nico, sorry).

What about Elisa? Or Luisa?

loobylu3 · 22/07/2008 20:10

Thanks you v much for your opinions everyone!

Girl: Matilda
Boy: Henry

cthea · 22/07/2008 20:20

Girls:
Eliza - so and so
Cecily - pretty
Matilda - a bit masculine
Sylvie - v pretty

Boys:
Henry - nice
Benjamin - so and so
Max - no
Nico (trying to please DH)! - Nicholas is nicer

Heated · 22/07/2008 20:21

Sylvie or Eliza (both on my shortlist so completely biased!)

Henry or Nicolas/Nicholas - Nico for short, unless you are Italian

HensMum · 22/07/2008 20:24

I wanted Matilda for a girl but DP vetoed it. Anyway, that's my fave from your girl's list. Eliza just makes me think of Eliza Doolittle. Cecily is a bit frilly for my taste. Sylvie is very pretty though.

I have a Henry so that's my favourite from your boy's list! I also like Benjamin. Max is OK but boring. Seems to be very popular at the moment. I don't like Nico. Agree with cthea that Nicholas is nicer. Perhaps you could use Nico as a nickname to please DH?

bluenosesaint · 22/07/2008 20:35

Girls:
Eliza - Lovely. Prefer Elizabeth but Eliza is very very pretty too.
Cecily - Not keen on Cecily (makes me think of sesspit sorry, i obv have a very strange mind ...)
Matilda - Ok, but very now iykwim
Sylvie - My first reaction was No, but when i say it aloud it sounds really pretty - i actually like it

Boys:
Henry - not overly keen
Benjamin - Great name. Ben is fab too.
Max - Again, a great name. On my shortlist if dd had have been a boy. Very popular in these parts (not that is necessarily an issue) ...you can't throw a stone without hitting a Max!
Nico (trying to please DH)! - Really don't like this. Sorry.

Good luck

loobylu3 · 23/07/2008 13:44

That's great- thank you everyone for opinions. Agree with BNS re Matilda. Really love the name Matilda and decided in 2005 (when pregnant with my son) that is we had another little girl would call her Matilda. Unfortunatly, since then has been used by a couple of celebs and become a lot more popular which puts me off a bit!
Anyway, good to know what everyone thinks!

i was worried about Sylvie because it is French, but then so is Sophie and Charlotte, and that doesn't stop us..
