Would it be ridiculous to call...

Son Charles (shorten to Charlie) when dd1 is called Charlotte? I ave a Charlotte and Molly at the mo and we are really struggling with boys names. We both like Charles/Charlie and dd is never called Charlie or shortened at all for that matter. She has always insisted her name is Charlotte. She is 5.5 now so I think it's unlikely that she would start being called Charlie but does it look silly Charlotte, Molly and Charles?

It would, sorry. BUT it's been done before, at least once, because I personally know a charlotte and Charles, half brother and sister, same sur name, different MUM, but they live in the same town and when people figure it out they do puzzled faces.

def dont do it even if you think lottie and charlie - they will choose their own nicknames - and their mates will - it will just be something you end up explaining all the time - not fair on the kids imo

Obviously I'm stabbing in the dark here as I've no idea what kind of names you'd go for. But don't call your son Charles if your dd is called Charlotte. That's like Erica/Eric, Phillippa/Philip.

My cats are Charlie (Charlotte) and Lottie (Lotus)

No kidding!

What's the appeal of Charles? Royalty theme?

Edward/James/Henry/William/Richard/John/George would also fit that.

DD1 is bound to be called Charlie at some point. 5.5 is very young to be so sure about nicknames.

I have a fairly long firstname, I was always called by the whole thing until about 11 or 12, then some of my mates started abbrieviating it, then my family did the same thing. Now most of my friends and family call me by nickname A. Another group of friends spontaneously started calling me a different nickname (B) when I met them in my twenties.

And for work/professional purposes I am the full thing, which obviously bleeds into friends I have from various workplaces.

So I have 3 names, which can be confusing/amusing when groups of friends mix.

But at age 5.5 both myself and my family would have sworn blind that my name was the whole thing and would always be...

I don't see a problem. All gorgeous names and if Charlotte at some point does want to shorten her name then it can also become 'Lottie' which is lovely too and better for a girl than charlie in my opinion. Go for it!

Don't do it!
I made it to 12 without my name being shortened, my brother got to 33 (last year) without his being shortened but it could have happenned much earlier. Now we're called Johnny and Jenny.
Still not a problem as we live at opposite ends of the country and don't keep in touch but it would have been utterly stupid had we both been small and had our names shortened.
No idea if my parents though it through when we were named Jennifer and Jonathan btw

To OP: It doesn't matter whether your daughter or son or both are ever called charlie. The name Charlotte is the girls version of Charles. So in effect you'd be giving them the same name.

Which is odd.

Would you have an Alexander and Alexandra? Francis and Frances? Simon and Simone?
Cos they are the same thing as a Charles and Charlotte.

Charles is too similar to Charlotte, how about Carl or Karl? Both are variants of Charles, but spell a tad differently from Charlotte.

I went to school with twins called Charles and Charlotte. I always thought it was a bad idea.

I didn't think Jennifer and Jonathan were really since we were known as our full names but maybe I'm wrong?
