Just come across this for a girl-just out of interest what do you think?
Pronounced An-tig-oh-nee.

I disagree, I found her really annoying! But I was 15, so maybe if I read or saw the play again now I would feel differently.

vanloadtovenice · 09/07/2008 20:51

I went to school with one, but she was always Tiggie, which I rather liked!

BlueChampagne · 10/07/2008 12:30

On the abbreviation front, in Modern Greek it's pronounced And-y-goh-nee, with the stress on the third syllable. So she could be Andie like Andie MacDowell.

Squarah · 11/07/2008 08:57

I know a gorgeous baby girl recently christened Antigone but always intended to be Tiggy - mother studied classics. Tiggy very cute for small baby and nice associated hedgehog memorabilia! But agree might get some difficulties in pronunciation/ teasing but what name doesn't at some point - depends what's important to you I think!

rowingboat · 28/07/2008 22:55

I love this name - it's on my list as well.
I worked in Greece for a while, teaching English and there were a few Antigones. They pronounced it 'andi-gonni' fwiw. Tiggy or Andy for short I imagine, both sweet for a girl IMO.
I love Persephone being shortened to Percy. Not that's on my list as well, just so I could call my daughter Percy, or son, but that would have to be Percival or Perseus I suppose. Hmm!

merielclaire · 02/05/2012 14:29

I have a 4 year old Antigone! I studied Classics and as soon as I read Antigone I knew it would be the name of my first Daughter. It's strange so many think she displays unwanted characteristics...moral, brave, just, unwavering, and a kick-ass feminist! What's not to love?!

merielclaire · 02/05/2012 14:31

Squarah it wasn't my Antigone's christening was it?!

InnitDoh · 02/05/2012 14:46

Love it. Love the character of Antigone. Wrote my dissertation on her. Great name, and Tiggy or Annie are great nicknames.

squoosh · 02/05/2012 14:51

Antigone could marry Ptolemy.

Cuthbert could be best man.

SpringHeeledJack · 02/05/2012 14:56

Psammead · 03/05/2012 10:11

Oh it's ancient! Didn't notice.

Merielclaire, it's not forbiddan or anything, but it's a bit weird because the discussion is not longer current.

Welcome to Mn Smile

merielclaire · 03/05/2012 10:18

Thank you! I just searched my Daughter's name and this was one of the threads :) I will check out new threads!

InnitDoh · 03/05/2012 18:46

I know a few Ophelias. Possibly one of the wettest and most 'tragic' Shakespeare characters.

Antigone is feminist icon. Do it!
