Vere; its a family name, what images does it conjour up?

Bryher; as in the Scilley Isles.

I would think Vere is a mispelling of Vera.

How do you pronounce Vere? If it is a family name I would keep it for a second name.It doesn't conjour up anything-I would assume that it was short for something.
I don't like Bryher at all, why not Briony. If you want a Scilly Isles connection you could have Agnes.

Oliveoil · 03/07/2008 15:29

My friend's dd is called Bryher

lovely name

never heard of Vere, sounds like a make of crockery....

MsDemeanor · 03/07/2008 15:31

I glanced at this and thought 'but Vera's a girls name" Bryher is a bit odd I think. Sorry. Vere does sound posh, but maybe because I was watching To The Manor Born the other day in fit of mad 80s nostalgia

mum2oandh · 03/07/2008 15:32

Bryher is lovely

AbbeyA · 03/07/2008 15:35

Sorry-I should proof read-should have had question mark and 'conjure'
Bryher would be OK if you had a connection to the Scilly Isles.

Blandmum · 03/07/2008 15:35

They both make me think of typos

Sorry

gladders · 03/07/2008 15:37

knew a little girl called Bryher (she must be about 4 now....) - always thought it was briar til her Mum spelled it? Quite a tricky spelling for a small child and she will spend the rest of her life spelling it for people.....

Oliveoil · 03/07/2008 15:54

yes, I thought it was Briar at first too!

but most names are strange nowadays do you not think, half the world will be at it, spelling things out "Leeeza. No, L E E E Z A, not L I S A. No, Leeeza, yes 3 e's. Yes, Yes! 3 E's ffs"

etc etc

Alderney · 03/07/2008 16:42

I'd spell Bryher as Briar...

Vere makes me think of taking a corner too quickly...

Twinkie1 · 03/07/2008 16:44

Vere makes me think of the hotel chain - De Vere!

Briar would be easier - for her to spell and the general public to pronounce!

Bronze · 03/07/2008 16:45

I think too many people wouldn't understand Bryher as a name and try and spell it differently. Theres always Mary or Agnes as people have mentioned.

TwoFir · 03/07/2008 16:51

How do you pronounce Vere?
Rhymes with Here.

I don't like Bryher at all, why not Briony?
lol, cos I dont like Briony

I think they are probably too tricky, I dont fancy explaining all the time, on the other hand they strike a chord, you know? Ah well.

also, I wouldnt want anyone to think I was adding random y and hs to the name, in a chavvy kind of way as some might say, as Bryher is the correct spelling but some may not know that. Briar is a different name, sounds the same but is very Sleeping Beauty and not quite what I had in mind.
Its perhaps far to tricky a name
