Hi, we already have an Amelia and we want to find a name that goes well with it for her sister who's due in September, but I'm worried the ones we like sound too similar.
We like Emily, Abigail, Amy, and Amber. Could any of those work or are they all too similar to Amelia?

I think Amy and Amber might be too similar, and also maybe Emily, it’s the Am/em sound, all nice names though! I think Abigail sounds least similar.

What about, Charlotte, Alice or Sophia? I get they are quite popular but I think they sound nice with Amelia.

My Mum's grandma was name Amelia Kathleen Lilian. Her sisters name was Dorothy. Amelia is my middle name and think it goes well with my first name which is Rachael.

Thanks, yes that's what I was thinking unfortunately. I really like Sophia and Alice but one of my nieces is Sofia and SIL is Alice so we can't use those really.

Abigail sounds different enough to me to use, the others feel a bit too similar when said together. Emma could work as an alternative to Emily.

KnitWitsAnonymous · 29/05/2026 10:56

I really like Abigail and think it works best with Amelia but there are several others that spring to mind ~

Amelia & Lydia

Amelia & Isla

Amelia & Elspeth

Amelia & Annabel

Amelia & Alicia

I think Emily is lovely (fwiw I love Amelia, it’s also my middle name!)

BoleynMemories13 · 29/05/2026 10:59

Personally I'm not a fan of repeated initials, but apart from the first letter Abigail is completely different to Amelia so I think that works best out of your list.

Amy is much too close (some people use Amy as a nickname for Amelia) and Amber is also very close in sound due to the first two letters. Personally, I think Emily is much too close in sound too, despite the different initial. When you consider that a lot of people mistake Emilia for Amelia, when heard aloud, then I think Emily is way too similar too.

Other names which go well with Amelia, if you decide against Abigail:-

Isabelle
Matilda
Freya
Eliza
Eloise
Elodie
Charlotte
Florence
Lydia
Sophia
Rose
Hannah
Imogen

Emily - too similar. Like calling them Emily and Emily
Abigail - like but wouldn't go for two names starting with A
Amy - too similar
Amber - like but wouldn't go for two names starting with Am

Olivia, Sophia, Isabella, Tabitha, Matilda etc

Thanks for all the suggestions! 😊 If Abigail ended up as Abbie which is probably inevitable how would that be with Amelia?

Matilda, Violet, Anneleise, Juliet.

Amelia and Juliet go beautifully together. They’re not similar but both are melodic and romantic.

MeekSqueak · 29/05/2026 14:15

Juliet
Rosamund
Rosalind
Cecilia

SJM1988 · 29/05/2026 14:17

Amy is a nickname for Amelia so I would avoid that. I'd say anything that doesn't start with Am is good.

I have an Amelia and Charlotte (Amy and Charlie)

I think Amelia and Abbie sound fine, does Amelia go by anything else, Millie for example?

LulaLulaByeBye · 29/05/2026 14:19

I think Amy and Amelia are too similar but I did have a relative called Amy Amelia, so who knows! I also think Amber is too similar with the Am start, and Emily because it just does sound like Amelia. If you love Abigail it could work but I would try to find a non A starting name.

Grace, Charlotte, Elise, Eloise, Elodie, Eilidh

We just call her Amelia, she's only two so she's not old enough to have picked up nicknames from friends yet. 😊

Oh please let her be Millie. My aforementioned great-grandma Amelia went by Millie and i think it's lovely.

Mumofgirls2017 · 29/05/2026 22:22

Sorry but I’d avoid all of those due to sound/ initials. How about Amelia and….

Evelyn
Eloise
Charlotte
Isabelle
Esme
Imogen
Lilian
Phoebe
Penelope
Florence
Matilda

TappyGilmore · 29/05/2026 22:23

Abigail would work I think. I agree that all of the others are too similar.

ThatMintMember · 30/05/2026 00:42

I have a son with an A name and I think other names starting with vowels sound great with A names.

Amelia and Anna
Amelia and Arabella
Amelia and Elouise
Amelia and Emma
Amelia and Evie
Amelia and Isla
Amelia and Isabelle

Amelia and Olive
Amelia and Olivia
