Honestly can I call my child Charlotte without there being huge boom in that name this year because of SATC?

Really love the name Charlotte but don't want dd to be in a class full of Charlottes just because of the year she was born and the popularity of SATC film. I know how it feels I was in a class of 20 kids when I was at school and 4 of us had the same name!!
Am I being paranoid thinking alot of people will call their child this? I also worry how people will shorten the name as not overly keen on name being shortened called our son Ben and not Benjamin for this sole purpose!!
Also if anyone has any suggestions for a middle name to go with Charlotte or alternatively can suggest a girls name that works well with Ben I would love your suggestions, have drawn a complete blank!!

Aren't there lots of Charlottes anyway?
A lovely timeless name though.

Jbck · 22/06/2008 21:07

Popular pretty name, don't think the film will make it any more so tbh.

alarkaspree · 22/06/2008 21:08

I think there are so many already, the film won't make that much difference. Sorry. Lots of them will be known as Lotty though.

DoubleBluff · 22/06/2008 21:08

there are loads of Charlottes anyway. 3in Ds's clas.

MingMingtheWonderPet · 22/06/2008 21:09

Charlotte is quite a popular name anyway, there are 3 in my DD's pre-school class of 10 children.
Having said that it is a lovely name, and the girls at pre-school all get called Charlotte, and not Lottie or Charlie

Thomcat · 22/06/2008 21:11

Charlotte suddenly popular due to sex and the city! No, I don't think so.

Thomcat · 22/06/2008 21:13

No-one in DD's school shortens her name, she is Charlotte. Perhaps as a teen she may decide to shorten it herself?

OFSTEDoutstanding · 22/06/2008 21:17

Must be where I live then I am a childminder and I collect from 2 schools and 1 nursery, think there is only about 2 charlottes in total in all the schools put together! Can anyone think of a middle name or 2 to go with it?

How lovely to see a baby name thread about a proper, normal name. How about Charlotte Olivia/Rose/Grace/Elizabeth/Ruth?

Gobbledigook · 22/06/2008 22:08

I only know two charlottes among all my children's friends/classes and family friends - it's not so popular at the moment I don't think.

Thomcat · 22/06/2008 22:18

Mine is Charlotte Alexandra but it's for a reason not because it went as such.

greenelizabeth · 22/06/2008 22:26

Eh? HELLO! Charlotte is #6 or something like that. I went to school with Charlottes, the girl who babysits for my children is called Charlie and my Goddaughter is Lottie. There is a Charlotte in my DC's class too.

Why will the name not go away? That's MY question.

greenelizabeth · 22/06/2008 22:28

Yes, emiliadaniel, good point. I do love Lottie, and I prefer Charlotte to Breeze or Zion!!

Even if she is Charlotte B or Charlotte G, she will survive.

Heated · 22/06/2008 22:31

Lottie has had a big surge in popularity this year - fits in with the Tilly / Libby / Ellie set of names, affectionate nn derived from the more formal.

snice · 22/06/2008 22:31

I know a Charlotte Emily which sounds nice

MissingMyHeels · 22/06/2008 22:34

My sis is Charlotte Louise

MissingMyHeels · 22/06/2008 22:36

Oh and when my sis hit 14 she shortened it to Charley much to my parents disappointment but it is because she is one of 8 in her year at school so they all have various spellings of Charlee/Lotty etc

hayley2u · 22/06/2008 22:39

its a lovely pretty name anyway, dont be worrying about that that would be 5 years away

snice · 22/06/2008 22:44

Oh and I know a Charlotte Alice as well

Moomin · 22/06/2008 22:47

SATC won't have any bearing on the popularity of the name Charlotte, imo. When I meet a Miranda I automatically think of the Tempest, not SATC!
Charlotte's a very popular - and a very pretty - name already

PeachyWontLieToYou · 22/06/2008 22:58

i know a charlotte and ben family

tbh worrying is silly, i also have a ridiculously common name (almost 50% of girls in my year called Claire!), i dont mind though.

You can plan as carefuly as you want and it can still change tomorrow- ds1 would have been a bethany, 2 weeks after the corrie baby was named that. mysister was the only nicola mum knew, her best friends at school (sisters) were nicola.... and nicola! lol

And i dont know ant rl sebastians (do on mn), and they're making brideshead revisited again so name could well take off

it don't matter, not really.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 23/06/2008 00:32

Lots of Charlottes around here too - very rarely abbreviated. It's a pretty name so, if you like it, don't be deterred by its popularity.

hatwoman · 23/06/2008 02:09

I don;tkno w any charlottes. apparently it was 12th in 2007 and 2006

thumbwitch · 23/06/2008 02:18

I know a Charlotte ELiazbeth, never shortened her name;
and a Charlotte Felicity who chose her own nickname of Fliss when she was in her teens but was unabbreviated Charlotte before that.

Comerscroft · 23/06/2008 07:23

It's a lovely classic name.

Don't worry about it being popular. Most of my contemporaries were either Anne, Margaret, Jane or Susan, and no-one thought anything of it.
