Trinity?

What do you think of the name Trinity for a girl? Our other child has a name that also starts with the letter T, so I do worry that people will assume we were intentionally trying to make their names match. I’m probably overthinking it.

OP posts:

I like it. The first thing it brings to mind for me is the gorgeous country parish that borders ours (in Jersey).

TeenLifeMum · Yesterday 12:57

So the post arrives for miss T smith and you have no clue which dc it’s for? For that reason alone it’s a no from me.

Ipsevenenabibas · Yesterday 12:57

I'm Catholic and Trinity is exclusively reserved for God.

Arran2024 · Yesterday 13:00

My childhood home was spent in a house on a street with a church called Trinity Avenue. It is a mega religious name imo

Chelseaflowershowcrisis · Yesterday 13:01

Are you a practising Christian, if not then I wouldn't. I met a man recently called Rahim which is a very Islamic name & I assumed he was Muslim. He wasn't, his parents just liked the name but the tricky thing is Rahim isn't just a Muslim name. It is part of a prayer that Muslims recite several times daily so it seemed a bit like cultural appropriation to name a non Muslim child.

Yes, I think it is off and disrespectful.

A decent handle on general knowledge should tell most people it is a central Christian concept.

Blueuggboots · Yesterday 13:39

It refers to a group of three, not just the Christian take.
I like it. I loved Trinity in the matrix!

Tabarnak · Yesterday 15:13

tinaabbot · Yesterday 12:21

Well Christianity stole the concept from earlier pagan religions, where the three tended to be goddesses…..

My first thought would be the university in Dublin, then the Matrix, neither of which are bad associations. I can’t imagine anyone of that generation thinking holy trinity first?

I like it as a name, a little different without being too out there.

The concept, but not the word 'trinity' I think?

But it started and refers to that particular group of 3.

Unlike Trio, for example. Or Triplet , or Triplicate.

It seems to come from the Latin for a group of 3, and is defined as such in the Oxford dictionary.

I suppose it depends on how the people you interact with use it. I am in Ireland, so maybe it’s different, but holy trinity was a long way down the list of things that popped into my head.

Religious or murderer in Dexter?

REDB99 · Yesterday 22:03

Awful and chavvy. I can imagine it being screeched loudly by a frazzled mum across a park. Expect her nickname to be ‘holy’.

Even without the religious context - group of three - why stop at 3?
Quintet has the potential for nn Quin - better than poor Quartet being called Quar for short.

Trinity sounds nice, but so do lots of words, Is that what counts? Irrespective of meaning? I like the sound of Immensity, Tuffet and Phosphorous. Would they be OK?

Of course the OP must choose whatever she likes, and plenty of people seem to like it. But she asked for opinions and reactions.

I wouldn't give both my kids the same initial - potential for confusion. And for sounding a bit twee.

wafflesmgee · Yesterday 23:22

Dislike. Chavvy in my opinion and it’s not a name… although it does give computer game character vibes…

HugoThatway · Today 09:52

@Tabarnak , Unity, Duality, Trinity, Quaternity, Quinternity, Sexternity, Septernity, Octernity, Novernity ...

@wafflesmgee , I agree with you.

Wannabegreenfingers · Today 09:55

On a side note, my mum and me had the same initials. It was a pain in the backside as I got older and letters were addressed to A B Surname. Never knew who's mail I was opening. Obviously easier if they put Miss/Mrs, but not always the case. I'd avoid having the same initials for family living at the same house.

DorisTheFinkasaurus · Today 10:02

It is a name in reference to the Holy Trinity and I'd give that serious consideration. That is its meaning and if you're not a believer in or follower of Christianity, it might not be the right name.

Love it. Have a friend called trinity, she is constantly complimented upon her name.

I’m also in Ireland and the Holy Trinity came first, before TCD or The Matrix.

It makes me imagine a toddler being followed around by a testy-looking beardy man, a thirtysomething pointing to his nail holes, and a large dove.

Trinity Mirror

LemonFlavour · Today 10:46

I picture a spoilt blonde American mean girl (think Regina George) when I hear or see Trinity. I cannot imagine a nice person having this name for some reason. It also reads as very American to me.
