How would you pronounce Elias?

Elias as Ee-Lee-as
Elias as El- lie- as

or any other ways of pronouncing it!

TheSmallAssassin · 23/05/2026 23:20

The Elias I know is pronounced the first way, so that's what I'd say.

DoYouLikeYourNaneFred · 23/05/2026 23:21

BrickProblems · 23/05/2026 23:27

the second way but I’ve met a guy from another country who pronounced it the first way - so I’d probably ask.

HaveYouFedTheFish · 23/05/2026 23:29

The one I know (DC's friend, teen) pronounces it closest to your first option, something like: Eh- lee- us (El-eey-us maybe). definitely not the lie version (which somehow sounds very much like a fundamental Christian from the US to me for some reason).

GinToBegin · 23/05/2026 23:39

eh-lie-ass.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 23/05/2026 23:45

The name of one of my great-uncles, not that I knew him.

lavenderscenteddrawerliners · 23/05/2026 23:55

The Biblical version seems to be E-lie-as and the Islamic version Eel-yaas, if that makes a difference.

ThisKeenPinkSnail · 23/05/2026 23:55

I've known a couple of men called Elias. They both pronouced it E-lie-us.

Frazzledinmyforties · 23/05/2026 23:57

I’m a teacher and the ones I’ve taught have been pronounced E-lee-ass.

Pistachiocake · 24/05/2026 00:00

Same as on Person Of Interest- I have never heard it pronounced any other way. Seems to have got more popular since then- I only remember one boy called that when I was younger.

sausagerollsarecool · 24/05/2026 00:02

Eh-lie-as would be my automatic pronunciation as that is how my friend/her son pronounces it... but I have noticed that some people even within their family (esp children) pronounce it more like EE-lie-as which has led to the shortening of Eli. I've also heard people guess it is pronounced eh-lee-us and eel-yus which are legitimate variations I think.

aurpod1980 · 24/05/2026 00:28

Eh-Lee-ass

aurpod1980 · 24/05/2026 00:30

aurpod1980 · 24/05/2026 00:28

HarryKanesRightFoot · 24/05/2026 00:36

I’ve always thought it was pronounced Ell-ee-ass.

Lemondrizzlesquash7 · 24/05/2026 00:52

Ee-lie-ass
