Clarence

I need to know if I've gone mad. This name is not a name that I would have even considered before I fell pregnant, but it continues to grow on me the more that I've thought about it. I just think Clarence sounds like a cute name for a little boy and would also sound mature in adulthood. Thoughts?

OP posts:

This is one of those names which shows name judging (Karen, Jessica, Debbie, Kevin etc) isn't new-it was used to signify a type (see William books, Oor Wullie etc). Certain "old" names span different classes (William, James, Luke, George, Elizabeth, Mary etc), but Clarence is usually seem as only upper class.
But will that change? Names like Tobias, Jemima, Tabitha etc used to be only upper-class. And does it even bother you?
Whatever you pick, someone will moan. Even picking one of the "safe" names will be judged as boring by some people!

Quite mad!

Georgiapeach21 · Today 16:24

Absolutely not.

my hormones made me want to call my middle child “Ashanti”. Thank god my husband talked me out of it 🤣

Teresa7 · Today 17:16

I’m pregnant, and Clarence is currently top of my list if I have a boy! Love it!

ItWasntMyFault · Today 17:19

If he turns out to be a solicitor or an accountant he probably won’t mind but I’m not sure if that will the case if he grows up to be a scaffolder etc

Jugglingeggs · Today 17:21

Had a horse called Clarence

ForeverTheOptomist · Today 17:23

... also ...

Clarence Cliff was a rather famous Art Deco designer
Clarence House is a rather famous place
and finally ... The Clarence TV series came to an untimely end due to the creator being up to no good. Hmm.

Tonissister · Today 17:25

I quite like it. Could be Clem for short. I don't like Clarry much as a nn - reminds me of the woman on the Archers.

Alouest · Today 17:27

I do like Clarence but Clarry kind of sounds like a girl to me.

The designer was Clarice. She was a woman.

Surely Clem is short for Clement ? Or Clemence?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Today 17:28

Nope. You’re mad. Your kid won’t thank you if you do this to them.

Clarence was the cross eyed lion in Daktari.

Omg that's it..I knew it was a lion.
Showing our age now with Daktari 😂
It's an unusual name OP and kids can be cruel😬

It was Clarice cliff , a woman , who was the art deco ceramic designer

user293948849167 · Today 17:40

It is cute but fine for an adult too
Nickname is tricky though- Clarry is cute for a child but not so much an adult, maybe Cal would work

OMGosh. You are quite right! I have always thought it was Clarence, and indeed a bloke! I am in fact very happy at this news!

NoisyBuilder · Today 17:43

Cute.

But no.

Name a teenager, not a cute toddler.

Yep!! You beat me to it 😀
For those who are old enough to remember 😅

Daffodilsinthespring · Today 17:50

I like old names but Clarence is a no from me. Clarry sounds feminine to me.

NewGoldFox · Today 17:51

Not sure…
there is a kids tv program/cartoon called Clarence.

Zov · Today 17:54

OMG no, that's an awful name for a baby. Sorry @Gracefullywalking 😬

Firebird83 · Today 17:55

I know one who goes by Clarry!

If Florence is ok for a girl, why not Clarence for a boy?

Calliopespa · Today 18:05

It's cute for a little chap, and rather distinguished thereafter.

I quite like it OP.

Vivienne1000 · Today 18:23

No no no. Think of secondary school and the jokes thrown his way.

ClaredeBear · Today 18:28

I very much dislike it and I can take to most names. I doubt it was ever wet popular. But if you like it, you should go with it.

CautiousOptimist · Today 18:30

Clarence is the angel in It’s a Wonderful Life I think? Unless he grows up to be rather serious chap it’s a bit much, sorry!
