That’s not really how nicknames work. What’s wrong with calling him Rufus?

Thisbastardcomputer · 16/05/2026 07:24

I’ve known several dogs called Rufus.

Twiglets1 · 16/05/2026 07:24

Roo (like the baby Kangaroo in Winnie the Pooh)

roshi42 · 16/05/2026 07:25

I think Ru (Roo) is super cute. It’s worked well in my real life experience for a Ruth.

Nicknames aren't linked to the child's actual name, they evolve over time. You could call him literally anything.

Jessbow · 16/05/2026 07:31

Rufus doofus,call him Doof= Nickname

A nick name evolves, you wouldnt usually decide it, its not planned,it happens

Th ob Shortening of Rufus is Ru

RaraRachael · 16/05/2026 07:35

Just call him Rufus

Holdonforsummer · 16/05/2026 07:39

bluejewels · 16/05/2026 08:05

Nickname for a dog would be easy: Woofus.

momager22 · 16/05/2026 09:08

Wow lots of snarky comments here.
I know two humans called Rufus.
one is an adult - often shortened to Roo. The other one, a toddler is just Rufus.

Firebird83 · 16/05/2026 10:22

Not Roofie

MiaKulper · 16/05/2026 11:46

Is this a MN thing, pick a name and a nickname? just call the child by his name fgs.

Definitely a MN thing but a lot of people don't know the difference between a nickname and a diminutive.

A nickname is a family name - we call my son after the way he used to pronounce his own name.

ginasevern · 16/05/2026 12:32

To be fair, a lot of mumsnetters use the term nickname when they actually mean the diminutive form of a name, such as Katy for Katherine. A nickname is something that either evolves or is given by a particular set of friends at a point in time. It more often than not has nothing to do with the person's real name. So someone call Rufus could have the nickname "Basher" for example.

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/05/2026 12:52

What’s wrong with calling him Rufus ffs, it’s a lovely name. I know someone who evolved into Roofs. NNs should evolve.

Exactly this.

I am guessing OP means "what are the typical diminutives for Rufus."

I know a Rufus who gets Roofy.

Sam10123 · 16/05/2026 21:39

Yes sorry, I mean diminutives. Still deciding on name so just curious to see what others/i may end up calling him
