What do you think of the name Matisse for a baby girl? I love this name.

The only one I ever met was male

Hoork · 13/05/2026 21:32

I’ve never heard it before but I can imagine it really suiting someone!

OneNewEagle · 13/05/2026 21:32

I’ve only known it as a male name. if you like it shortened to mattie go for Matilda.

Zov · 13/05/2026 21:33

NO!

PinkCatCushion · 13/05/2026 21:35

Not keen: a male painter is the vision it conjures up for me.

Efacsen · 13/05/2026 21:40

Henri Matisse - French painter

Pemba · 13/05/2026 21:44

Don't be daft it's the SURNAME of a very famous dead French painter (male).

Is there a girls name with a similar sound maybe?

Calliopespa · 13/05/2026 21:47

It's a pretty sound, I get that. But it's the equivalent of calling her Picasso, Monet or Rembrandt.

What about Mattie? It has good Edith Wharton vibes!

BlueMoon37 · 13/05/2026 21:48

I know it is thevlast name of French painter Matisse, but it is also a gender neutral name and I find it very sweet for a girl.

I work with a lovely female Matisse! I think it's a lovely name and have never once thought of a male French painter when I see her 🤣

Bubblewrapart · 13/05/2026 21:53

Wasn't it a car by daewoo?

Mati is cute as a shortening!

BlueMoon37 · 13/05/2026 21:56

It is also a girl name, you can look it up

It is very sweet OP, but I'm not sure it is a name other than a handful of people have named their baby after the painter is it? I think that's the origin - and truthfully I've never actually heard it being used.

If you like artists of that era, what about Camille? This sounds pretty and makes me think of Monet's wife - and also Camille Claudel so more arty connections. Matisse's wife was Amelie?

LilyLemonade · 13/05/2026 22:12

I've come across one Matisse - a young woman - I find it unusual but nice.

Calliopespa · 13/05/2026 22:22

It's a teeny bit pussy cat if I'm totally honest Op.

It does sound sweet but I'm not sure about it for a baby. Gorgeous for a kitten.

Giraffehaver · 13/05/2026 22:25

I like it very much. Great tribute to the artist and has a lovely feminine sound

Roulett · 13/05/2026 22:33

It’s a lovely name. Don’t swap it for Matilda that’s so common now and doesn’t have the same qualities at all.

user1492757084 · 14/05/2026 06:39

Matisse is gorgeous.

Others similar, to me, though not as nice ..

Mietta
Manon

I like the name Mattie, and I like Edith Wharton, but I'm still not over that ending two years after reading it! Not sure I could use the name 😂
