Muslim baby boy names help me chose

I’m expecting my third child, a boy and were stuck name wise. So pleaseeee helllpp mmmeeeee :)

we thought we gave my other children fairly easy to pronounce names that wouldn’t cause them hassle in their life (wrong no person can say them despite them being short) and I definitely don’t want to do that again, so they must be easy to pronounce and not be too overtly ‘Muslim’ (sucks because discrimination is real, and sometimes having a very ‘other’ name is a blocker) but we still want Muslim name.

our contenders are

rayan
elias
rafi

what do you prefer and why?

our extended family is so big that names like Ismail, Adam, Zakariya, Harris, kamran, Aydin, Ayman, Zaid, zain are already taken

Sami was on our list but I think it could read as a bit chavvy juvenile and a bit like a nickname. It was on a list for our eldest boy, but a cousin also ruined it.

a lot of the others are taken..

I don’t love jamal it’s too close to jamal (camel) the long vowel at the end haha. Plus it’s very ‘out there’

Ok I would pronounce it Jamaaaal - so it wouldn’t sound like Camel. What do you mean it’s out there?

Incorgnito · 12/04/2026 02:09

Not Elias. It'll always be pronounced wrong. I like Rayan.

thornbury · 12/04/2026 06:44

I know Rayan is unisex, I guess that doesn't bother you. I like Rafi. I know several Elias and Ilyas too. Elias will likely be pronounced E-lye-as in the English way by those who aren't familiar with the Eleeas way of saying it. Do you like Kasem?

I know a little girl called Rayyan (I think that's how they spell it), is it commonly used for both sexes?

I like Rafi but guess you'd get a lot of different spellings and some assumptions it is short for eg Raphael. Depends if that worries you.

I know a little boy called Liban and really like the name.

Think it can be used for both, more common for boys though with girls typically being called raya but it is a unisex name

I mean to my mind it is a very visually ‘muslim’ ‘Arab’ foreign’ name and we were looking to avoid that out of fear of discrimination (it sucks but my husband has a very Muslim name, and he ends up people constantly mispronouncing it repeatedly, searched at airports etc) I also think yeah we’d stretch the long vowel but the rest of the world wouldn’t

...usually you only need to correct people once.
You end up correcting a lot of people 'only once' and quite a few more than once. @DomesticArchaeologist .

@Conundrummum123 , Rafiq? Sami is fine IMO.

Are you looking for a name that is used for Muslim boys but doesn’t sound like it’s a name for a Muslim boy?
I teach in a school where most of the children are Muslim. Of all the names that have been posted on here, I’ve never come across a Muslim child called Rafi, but it is fairly common as a nickname for Raphael, which is a name of Hebrew origin.

TheFaithfulWeaver · 12/04/2026 11:51

Every Rayan I have known has been an absolute sweetheart. I have a great fondness for the name, so definitely my favourite!

What about Rehan? Rahil? Apparently all the names I like are R names...

Rafi by itself is a Muslim name

No not rafiq that’s again a very ‘foreign’ name

Yep - he's less likely to be 'profiled' with Rafi rather than Rafiq

Sad but true

Rafi is a great name!

I don't think it's more 'foreign' than Rafi, Sami or Rayan.

Is the surname an obviously Muslim one?

To my mind is it more marked as ‘Muslim’ so the surname is quite Muslim but I’ve seen some Sikhs with the last name too but you wouldn’t think it was a ‘white British ‘ last name

Idris

HollyGolightly4 · 13/04/2026 10:19

Love Rafi and Elias

The Rayan I taught last year was particularly rude, so that's put me off that one 🤣.

Such a shame Ismail has gone, I absolutely love this name.

Wasn’t on the list of 3 options 😉

Idris is cool!

I worked with a Basil

Daniel (no need for the other odd spelling)

MiaKulper · 13/04/2026 12:23

Daniel (no need for the other odd spelling) Danyal is not an odd spelling. It's a Muslim name.
Danyal

Yes, I know it's a Muslim name - my friend's son is a Muslim Daniel. There is no need for the other spelling which makes it 'other'

Yodellayhehoo · 13/04/2026 12:33

Khalid
Jamal
Jameel
Yusuf
Adam

Yodellayhehoo · 13/04/2026 12:34

Wouldn't Elias be spelt Ilyas, what about ayuub and Yaqoub or Ibrahim?

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 13/04/2026 12:37

Rafi is really nice!

RaininSummer · 13/04/2026 12:54

Rafi is very nice
