Hard to know without knowing the name, @LassiKopiano24 . If it was something like Vicky then I'd think it was short for Victoria but I wouldn't assume that an Ella was short for anything unless I was told.

Thinking of IRL, people have usually said something like 'Lizzie, she's really Elizabeth' or 'Tom, not Thomas' .

@Calliopespa , I remember being dumped by a boyfriend and a friend telling me how dreadful he was, and I thought 'Why are you telling me this now and not when I was seeing him?'.

DH had this when he broke up with an ex and everyone said, “oh thank goodness, we couldn’t stand her!” Apparently, before he proposed to me he went and demanded really honest opinions from his friends and family in case they saw something he was blind to again! Grin

Yes that’s true! Maybe diminutives are just more common now, my neighbour has just had a gorgeous baby boy called Jimmy, not James but she told me that I didn’t ask so likely she has been asked a few time prior.

It’s a good point actually that Etta (ate a) might be a future joke. Maybe nothing that could be even potentially eaten, so I think I revise my view that Etta Rose is cute.

Etta Rose sounds like ate a rose

TeenLifeMum · 10/04/2026 20:53

I like Etta Sophia/Sofia.

I never understand the obsession with proper names you have no intention of calling your dc because you really want them to be called by the nickname. I have a dd called Kitty (after my great aunt). Not Katherine or Kathleen, just Kitty. That’s the combination of letters we chose. I’ve never actually been asked if it’s short for anything in 15 years.

I agree.

I think I would with Etta and Kitty because they seem like they are short for something and because they sound like 'ate a' and 'kitty'.

NeedingAGoodNap · 10/04/2026 21:28

reminds me of et cetera for some reason. Lots of ways for kids to bully this name which is worth considering

For me it depends on the name. I would only go for a longer version if I liked both.
I really like Kitty but not that keen on Katherine so think you made a good choice. Similarly I love Lottie but not charlotte.

The family I know who called their dd Charlotte with the plan to call her Lottie have ended up with the full name and aren’t sure why (she’s 17 now). I have a longer traditional name and dislike one more common nickname but I’m known by a less common one. I’m rarely called my full name.

Definitely not Rose or anything else vaguely edible!
